Can real rusty rims be salvaged? Or should I replace them? The front ones wernt too bad so I just wire wheeled then and sprayed them with galv. spray paint. The rear ones on the other hand are totally rusted, no holes though and loaded with cal. If I take the time to wheel off the rust and spray them, will the galv spray hold up or will they eventualy rust back?

Thanks,

scott

Scott, you can weld a patch in there, this is double bead Farmall 300 rim, went to pot about 10 years ago, we bent some metal to sort of replicate the portion of rim, welded it solid, it still works today. The patch is approx 6x4 shaped, fitted on the inside of the rim and welded on both sides.

I would highly recommend sandblasting if you are going to keep the rims. That way you can see if there are any spots where the rims are really thin. I have sandblasted rims that looked really bad, but cleaned up really well and were structurally sound. I also have sandblasted ones where an 2 inch diameter area around the valve stem fell out when I was done. You can also weld in a patch. Roger

Even low pressure tractor tires can do a lot of damage when the rim blows apart. I was near a little Case VAC when it blew a rim, it almost took the sliding door right off the track.

If they are not rusted more than about half way through, they should be ok. Any holes or potential holes, repair or replace. The rust in those pits is best removed with sand blasting. I use MP 170 epoxy primer on mine and paint with GM rally wheel paint (PPG 8568)that I use on the outside. If you don't want to sandblast, and can't otherwise remove all the rust, remove all you can and use a rust preventative or converter to neutralize it. But, from your description they may need to be replaced -- you have a lot of money in that tractor, what's a little more??

I've had good luck just cleaning them up and painting them. I have a good number of them that where like that and if theres no holes inthem I'd just clean them up and paint them.

If you got some small holes you can fill them in with fiberglass patch. I used that on my Super C rim. Had about a 2" hole and that worked great. After the patch set I jsut used some sand papper and smothed it out. You can barly tell on were the patch is. I was skeptical at first if it would hold but its been there for 6 months. I could also have a patch welded in but that was above my Arc welding skills. Andrew
