I have a 1948 Farmall C that has a (worn out)12V
alternator on it but the ingnition is still 6V. I"m going to rewire the whole thing to 12V neg ground. My question concerns battery cable size.Is 2ga
sufficiant for a 12v neg ground system or should I go with "0" gauge? the cable are not very long on a C

Thanks for the advice guys.I'll go with the "0"
gauge. And thanks Hugh for the tip on mounting the alternator I'll definately look into that.

Squire, a C is not too hard to crank and yes a 2 gauge or even a 4 for that matter would allow the starter motor to work. However, larger battery cables will drop less voltage and waste less energy to heat, but instead allow it to be expended at the starter motor where its needed. The difference is far less noticeable at moderate temperautres, but when shes cold and batery efficieny is greatly reduced PLUS the engine harder to crank (a double whammy), thats when bigger battery cables can allow her to crank faster as theres more voltage at the starter. On bigger tractors that are harder to crank, I prefer 0 or 1 Gauge on 12 volt and 0 or 00 on 6 volt, although smaller will suffice and smaller is also less a problem on smaller tractors such as that C.

Your tractor your call.

Squire: Heavy is always good, but 2 guage should be sufficient for 12 volts. 0 or 1 guage are a must for 6 volt systems. I use 1 guage on everything. Also go with soldered on ends, those will save you a lot of grief.

Another little tip as I expect the C has that same flange on block as SA has, where the front end bolts on. Use a deep pulley, thus allowing you to set the alternator back just a wee bit and lower as well. The easiest I find on this is get a double pulley from an older V8 GM vehicle and use the outer pulley for the belt. This allows you to tuck that alternator in close to the block, thus making it look much neater.

Hugh,

See, I do lurk on this board occasionally. Sounds like good advice to me.
