Is there a way to tell a distilate head from a gas only head on a Farmall H?

Remove the valve cover and look for the number -- someone will tell you what it is. Don't think you can tell the heads apart otherwise, unless you look at the combustion chambers. And, if your serial number does not have X1 after it, it is likely distillate or kerosene, if the engine is original. Also the original hood will have a hole in it for the starting tank.

Good question...I have 3 H heads out in the shed, and one on a running tractor. All 4 have had the part # under the valve cover ground off. One has the R1 part# stamped on the side of the head with hand stamps. I'm pretty sure all were origionally Dist. heads. All 4 have the X1 added to the serial number, but not factory added. I don't know if this was standard practice years ago, or something some dealers did when they converted the tractors to gas. I think I've read where the valves are different sizes in the different heads, but haven't checked them out yet. ken
