I was wondering what the 281 engine was used in and what its horsepower rating was. I was also curious if its overall outside dimensions were similar to the smaller engines from an M. Bought a Super M with one in it. Thanks in advance.

We have 2 Super M"s at the farm with the 281 ci. engines in them. I was told that IH might have started putting them in the so called last running of these tractors right before the 450 came out. They do run well.

Depends on whether its a complete C-281 out of a
450 or a replacement block.Have worked on several SM that just the block was replaced with one from IH later on and all other parts were the SM. IF this is case depending on bore and pistons you may have same power as original SM or 3 to 7 more.
If complete 450 type C-281 with Cam gas head and manifold you should have more power, agian it would depend on piston type and tune of engine.

the 281 was used in the 450 and the moter will bolt right up to a M-450 without changing any thing.

I would say you have a 450 engine in your SM.51 drawbar hp.
