Sounds like my $750 overhaul on my H that turned into around $3500 worth of parts and machine work...

Kelly: You should have 10 bolts block to clutch housing. All face in toward clutch housing except for top 2 which are above the starter they screw in from back side. While your in the clutch housing you might just as well replace the PTO drive shaft. and put the new seals in also.. Also if the 706 dose not have a TA there is a small brass wear band on the trans input shaft check it also.. Once you open up a 706 its like opening Pandoras box you will find things that need fixed or replaced. Been there done that 1 706 is enough.
By the way I hope you marked you power steering hoses that came off the top of the valve on the clutch housing? If you cross them you will dump all the little pieces of junk thats trapped back into the steering system. To replace your throw out bearing you will need to remove snap keeper on right side and drive the clutch shaft to the left. if you replace the PTO drive or seals. If you replace the pto drive, and have a old trans input shaft you and weld the 2 togather and make a clutch tool out of them. Hope this helps

Kelly Should be two 1/2" cap screws into the top of the block through the TA housing right under the gas tank.

Well I am glad you are pulling the block. I don't know where they are either, but pulling the engine will make you happy in the long run. (clutch condition, rear main seal, throw out brg.)

I am not happy about it. I know I will be glad I did. (later) But I now have to replace the clutch too. I am not going to get back there and put the old one back in.
Sorry to vent, guess I will be a crank all winter now.
