My wife just bought a couple of horses, and we are in need of a small square bailer. I will be pulling it with my old Farmal M. In the local paper they are advertising an IH #37 Square Hay Bailer up for an auction this weekend. I only need it for a few hundred bails each year. Does anybody know when these models were built (years) and if they are any good or are they difficult to keep running? What would be a good bid to stop at?

Don

Don my dad has a 47 and that one is 1968 model. The 37, 47, and 57 were made the same time. I don't know how many years they were made. The 47 has been a very good baler. We use to bale 6000 bales a year with it with very little trouble. It is still used today a little bit. I bought a 435 6 years ago for 500 bucks. The 435 is a little nicer baler. It works a lot better in corn stalks, than the 47.

the IH 37 baler is a good baler and hardly ever breaks, I have one that I use to bale 2,500 bales of hay and 1,000 bales of straw each year. Your M will have no problem pulling it. I paid $600 for mine but it had beek kept inside and was in perfect condition.

When you are looking at used I would definitely consider New Holland versus the International. I have had better luck with the New Holland. The main factor though is condition of the baler. I bought a NH 273 several years ago for $425 and I think it was built in the 70's. I thought the International 37 was built in the 70's also.

I think they were made in the 50's. They had the red and white paint scheme already. Durability depends a lot on how well they are maintained. Some people claim that their's rarely miss a single bale, where as others are lucky to get 2 good bales in an entire field. We had good luck with a 37, but the 47 we got later was nothing but trouble. I would check the knotters for worn fingers, loose gears, worn shafts and the like, and also check the plunger's bearings along with mounting points for the wagon hitch. Those are the typical baler problem areas. Good luck!
