I'm working on a narrow front Super M that has nearly a full round of play in the steering wheel. I replaced the u-joint in the steering shaft and tightened up the bearings on the worm. The sector gear is tight on the steering post splines. For some reason, IHC seems to have built one of the worlds finest tractors and forgot to include a method of adjusting the steering box.

Is there something I have missed? Is there parts available? If not I could use a few ideas. It borders on suicide to drive in high gear because the front wheels flop back and forth so much.

Dewayne - Your comment about the castle nut reminded me: I have removed the castle nut from the pivot shaft, turned it over and threaded it back on until it was flush with the top of the shaft before hammering on it. This protects both the pivot shaft threads AND the relatively delicate castellated face of the nut while banging on the shaft.

Also....I too ran into a slightly worn bushing areas of the pivot shaft. Was able to compensate for this by inserting a piece of .005(?) shim stock between the OD of the bushing and the ID of the bushing bore as I drove the bushings in. This rendered the bushing ID's slightly undersize when inserted and compensated for the wear on the shaft.

My experience alligns precisely with Bob M here. If the upper bushing is worn you need to check the shaft as well. Typically I find them to be worn about .010-.015" and fixing this along with the new bushing makes the old girl primo again. I weld the worn shaft area completely then have the local machine shop turn it down for me. Also I have managed to break the sector gear castle nut when removing as described. I now remove the castle nut and replace with a standard one before I smack it with the big hammer.

You likely have worn bolster pivot shaft bushings - especially the upper one (the one directly beneath the sector gear).

To check, watch the sector gear and rotate the steering shaft back and forth. If you see any lateral movement (side to side or front to back) of the sector gear, you've found the problem.

New bushings are available from CIH and they are relatively cheap ($40 or so for a set). However you must disassemble the entire front bolster assembly and drop the pivot shaft to get at 'em.

Punch below for a few pix from when I rebushed the front end on my Super H. (New bushings completely eliminated steering slop in mine...)

Tip: The pivot shaft (sector) gear fits on a tapered spline fit at the top of the pivot shaft. To remove the gear without a puller, jack the front end of the tractor and remove the lower bolster/front wheel assembly. Now loosen the nut at the top of the pivot shaft it's flush with the top of the threads. Now hit the top of the shaft with a large brass hammer. Or place a soft metal scrap on top of the pivot shaft and give a good lick with a sledge hammer. The shaft should pop free. Finally unscrew the nut and drop the shaft out thru the bottom.

Are you sure the ball bearing on the worm is good and has no play. Also, the outer race of the bearing is clamped in place by the big plug in the front of the steering box. If that outer race is not clamped tightly, you will have steering play. Sometimes shim washers are needed to get that outer race clamped tightly in place.

I guess you have a bearing problem. Take the top cover off where the worm gear mates with the half gear, and jack the front of the tractor up by the frame. If this is the problem, you will see how this creates excesive gear lash. I have not replaced these bearings, but I know there are a lot of good posts in the archives.

paul, are you talking about thrust bearings in the bolster?... I may try that w/ mine and see if i can tighten it up a little more...i swapped the top gear and the worm gear for better ones out of a donor, ( which helped a lot), but there is still an annoying "delay" in steering input, if you know what i mean.

Yes, I hear that top gear can be a devil to get off. I can"t comment much, because I have not done it myself. Someone here has photos on their web page showing the process, and the system they made to pull that top gear-very interesting.
