im doing a in frame reubuild on my super m.im wondering how you get it back in time.when i took my disrbuitor out,i left everything connected and took it all off where it connects to where you dump in the oil.i cant find a mark on anything, except for yellow paint marks.does the govenor have to be timed, or do you just slide it in.how do you get the valves in time with everything else.

I would presume you did not remove the timing cover. If you do not have the valve cover on just turn the engine over til you see #1 intake valve close them turn stll the DTC mark comes to the pinter on the timing cover. set distributor roter no #1 and bolt it on.

I presume you have removed the cam drive gear and now need to retime it?

If so there's a timing mark on the crankshaft gear, a pair of marks on the cam gear, and a mark on the hydraulic pump/distributor drive gear. (On the cam gear the marks are small prick punches 180 deg apart on the front side of the gear - punch below for a photo)

With the crank at TDC and the cam set so both valves on the #1 cylinder are closed, align the nearest mark on the cam gear with the crank gear mark.

Now with the distributor set so the rotor is under the #1 plug tower, the hydraulic pump gear timing mark should be aligned with the other cam gear timing mark.

----

There is no timing for the governor or governor idler gear. Just slide 'em on however they want to go!

You need to bring No1 piston up on the compression stroke to TDC. Remove No1 sparkplug. Hold your thumb over plug hole while someone cranks the engine until you feel compression against your thumb. Then keep cranking until the notch on the damper pulley is aligned with the pointer. Both valves on No1 cylinder should be closed. Rotate the rotor to No1 position in the distributor and install the distributor.

If you didn't remove the camshaft during this rebuild, your valves should still be time. You need to post back if the cam was removed since this must be installed correctly before installing the distr. Hal
