Oh boy. Kinda wishing I would have just got that used combine engine for $500 now.
My quick $700 sleeve and piston job will soon be surpasing $2000 I suspect.
Funny how a motor can sound so good and turn out sooooo bad.
Not ever ever ever going to buy another tractor with a strait pipe on it. Too dang loud to hear properly.

I know Hugh..... I know.
Any way just got the head back from the shop. That check hurt $580, but he did a good job all new now.

I measured that #5 rod jornal in 3 spots 2.366, 2.344 and 2.349 Yikes could go sleding on that hill.

Could just throw a .30 under bearing in it, but figure that would give way about the 3rd round with the hay bine.

Guess I will pull it out this weekend. Got a price with out any build up 1st af about $300 for a grind.
Need a better way. Any ideas?

Have you tried the salvage yard in Worthington? Seems to me they sell used GROUND crankshafts. Not sure if it's cheaper or not, but worth checking into.

There are two shops in Fergus Falls that can help you.
Smokey"s Machine Shop 218-736-3242 and ask for Denny.
Hedahls Parts Plus 218-739-4655 ask for Kerry.
Both shops have ther own crank grinders. Estimates are in the $130 range to weld 1 journal & grind the rest.
Tell them I sent you.

Thanks Wayne.
I will call them.
I called CrankShaft supply in Minneapolis. They said $199 to grind. $31 to flux and $61 for each jornal that needs build up.

Find a used crank and have it turned , i have had cranks welded and sometimes it works and some times it does not as the will break and with amount of combines and tractors that have been hit in the head a good grank for a 263 should not be hard to find or that high priced . when i did my buddys his crank was just under standard and we had it gound down to ten and ten then i got goofy and had every thing balanced but it is not nessesary just something i wanted to try as we were not worried about the cost as with the grinding and balancing it only came to 210 bucks . It all come down to not what ya know it is who you know.

A machine shop in Baltimore charges $125.00 to grind all journals on a 6 cylinder shaft. Hal

Dang Kelly, thats pretty steep for a crank grind..last one I had done 2 years ago run me $70,might try to find a machinist who actually grinds his own cranks, most don't...sounds like the middleman is adding a substantial markup to it..

Thats what I am looking for. The only machine shop I know is the one I had the head done and a few have said he over charged me a bit on the valve job. He does not do his own grinding of cranks.
Needs some guys from Mn to give me some places.

Ouch!

Do I smell a history of tractor pulls in this guy's former life?

Dont know. I dont think so. I think a, Crap lets put a kit in it and sell it real fast thing.

Oh well, if you cant live with the fix I guess a different hobby would be in store.

This is going to be a good engine when I am done. Its staying with me.
If this tractor ever goes its going with a combine engine in it.

Yep,

Heck, the fixin' is the hobby. :>)

Wonder if a crank kit might be the way to go? Especially, if you aren't going to be using it for really heavy pulling?

Dunno, hope you come out alright. One things fer sure, I know you'll have 'er ticin' 'em off in 'bout a week. :>)

Sounds pretty bad Kelly. Might try and find a better used crank from a salvage yard that will give you your money back if it turns out to be junk.
