Hi I have a Farmall 300 gas that sometimes starts, It will start if I have a battery charger on the battery, so I replaced the battery; it still does work. Without the charger if you let off the key after the engine starts spinning it will sometimes fire. It gets spark all the time and if you turn the key from the on position to off the wire from the coil will spark. The compression is good all the way across, 70psi. and we tried running a jumper from the battery to the positive side of the coil to eliminate bad wiring or switch. You can get it started by pulling it and when it does start it runs great. It has new points, condenser, coil, plugs, and the wires are only a few years old. Frankly I’m stumped! If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it!

You should have a terminal on the key starter switch that only has voltage when the key is in the start position. You should have another terminal on the switch that feeds voltage to your
ignition. Whenever the switch is in the on position there should be voltage here at all times. Take a volt meter and check for voltage
on the terminal on your switch that feeds the ignition when cranking. If there's no voltage
to your ignition during cranking your switch may be the problem. You said the engine fires when you let off on cranking. Hal
PS: Is this a 12 volt system with a ballast resistor? It can cause this if resistor is defective.

I think your compression is a litle on the low side. I not sure what a 300 should have but my fathers Super H has 145 pounds of compression. So I think it should be alitte higer this would help starting. If the tractor sitts for a long period of time the rings may have stuck to the piston. Pour some trans fluid or M M oil in the cylinders. Andrew

Actually I think the compression is a LOT low. Should be in the 140 to 150 range. But there is enough that the tractor should start.

That happens alot. Your starter is drawing so much juice away from the points that they dont fire that good and when you let off on the switch or key all the juice is directed to the points and it starts. it happened to my SM. All I needed was a new battery. I would try cleaning all battery and starter connections then if it still does it may be a rebuilt starter. May Help. JON

If you have a ballast resistor, and a 12v no resistor required coil, the symptom will happen.
If the starting wiring is missing the bypass (from the solenoid "I" terminal to the coil side of the resistor, that is the problem.
If the starter is drawing excessive current, that is the problem. Starter draw (measured with a cheap hold against the wire gauge) should be about 250-350 amps warm 6volt or 200-300 range 12 volt (if cold ~freezing the current can double).
