Take the adjusting nut off. Take the bolts out of the outer cover (five or six). Pull the cover off and you will get a good idea what you are in for. There are usually spacers beneath the cover you can remove if you are out of adjustment and your disks still have life. The brake is a dry unit and you will see a disk which you can remove. Behind it is the brake unit which you can pry out. It is two steel plates held together with 3 springs between which there are 3 balls, all of which can wear or break. Next is the last disk. If your pedal is going to the floor and you are out of adjustment, you either need to remove the spacers or need a new set of discs.

terry: Don't have a diagram, but the fix is quite simple. First take that plate off the side and clean them, especially the balls and ramps. You'll notice shims when you remove the plate, as the brakes wear you remove shims to make up for the wear.

Hugh's right, they're a piece of cake. Make sure all parts are free of oil. Make sure oil isn't leaking past the bull pinion shaft seal and onto the brakes. Clean the parts with a good brake cleaner, I like the stuff from the Deere dealer. Make sure the balls are round, and the ramps they ride in are not worn. Lubricate the balls with graphite, oil-based lubes will collect brake dust and cause the balls to stick.
