Hi Guy,

No Sir, you did. It is just as you said; the old 806 front end has those longer steering arms out at the spindles that just 'eat up' the full "throw" of the thing.

The tractor "feels" a little better now since I widened the stance, but it is still not right and this old turkey will never spin on one wheel like it should until I find the correct new style front end with those shorter arms.

I called all over to find one, but so far, 'taint one to be found anywhere.

So, guess I live with it. :>)

Allan

Allan, I don't think you need a whole different front end, just the spindles and arms. Check some part numbers to make sure before you buy parts, but I'm 99% sure they'll interchange.

Did you try Bates corperation (batescorp.com) or JP tractor salvage (jptractorsalvage.com) I have had very good luck at both places getting hard to find parts.

So if I understand it, the wheels aren't turning as far as they should? They'll turn farther, but can't because of the tierod linkages, right?

Ah, that's easy if you don't mind a little cutting and welding. There are two ways to go about it:

1. Shorten the arms at the spindles.
2. Lengthen the arm at the steering box.

Frankly, I would go with #2. If the tractor's done any loader work, it's been broke there before anyway and probably needs to be reinforced. Plus, it's only one cut and weld versus two. On top of that, it's hidden under the tractor where nobody can see the crappy job you did :)

Hi Nat,

Yeah, I'd do that in a heartbeat if I could figure out how to canter the darned holes so the inner tie rods would stay tight.

An inch or two in at the main middle steering arm would sure take care of it.

Allan have you tried T Lang in Eagle Lake Tx. ? He has a tractor salvage yard there. Eagle Lake Tractor.
That old man can find about anything.
I can look for the number if you can't find it.

Hey buddy, if it was me, and thank goodness it ain't, I'd cut and weld that old girl in a New York second. There's no way I'd buy a whole new front end just to fix that thing. Course I pride myself on not spending a cent on anything if I can design it, build it, fabricate it, or come up with a better design. Just raised that way I guess. When I was a kid, we had to fix that old stuff with whatever was laying out behind the shop and now it is a point of pride. Hope ya figure it out, Harley

Yeah Harley...and I still do sometimes. But Allan I think is a lot like me. I try to get it right when I can or I want it to look good.
His is both functional and shiney. If you saw that old 656 I been using...you might get sick. Straight from dad's old shop, work clothes to the max, no cleanup in years...but it's functional. At least by dad's standards anyway. Hate to change it...it reminds me of him and his old coveralls.

I'm with you Bill,

There's nothin' prettier than an IH working and the darned paint has absolutely nothing to do with their appeal.

They are like the Energizer Bunny. Just keep goin' and goin' and goin'. :>)

The tapered reamer you can use to make the extender plate is available from EICO and other tool companies. Either a reimer, or a taper sided end mill for milling draft into mold cavities. All you need is the taper in degrees and taking a clay model of the hole, cutting it in half long ways, and measuring it with a protractor will do it (take it along to get the reamer).
