Did you end up buying the 786 with the mfwd? If you did and decided not to use the mfwd or know were I can found that would be very helpful. I need one to mount on my 1586 to pull my 34 foot krause wing disc. I can"t get enough traction. thanks

the 786 with the rops is a dog, or at least ours was. it had a lot of trouble with fuel injectors. the hydraulic pump was bad too, as long as I can rememeber, but that made it good for the tmr wagon, which it did for our last 4 or 5 years farming. high pto speed low oil flow wouldn't kick the remote valve out while feeding.

I had a 1086 mfwd in the field it was great. In tight places it was a little clumsy. But a loader on a fwd is great if you don.t mind the truning radius. Dad had a loader on a 85hp Hesston mfwd and that thing would dig and haul dirt better than my 2 wheel drive 1086 with a loader. If you don't mind the turning go get it.

Yep, turning radius is not good at all on those old Elwood front axles. Other than that, the 786 is typical IH for the time. Good tractor for the most part. If it was 2wd, it'd probably be one of the handiest tractors on your place.

Why anyone would put that heavy clunky MFWD unit on a tractor with only 80HP is beyond me, though... I wouldn't think there'd be a whole lot of benefit with the limited power.

We've got a 2wd 786, had it since new. It's got around 8000 hrs on it now. It has been very reliable, aside from the typical 86 series shift linkage problems, but I've got that fixed now. The D-358 engine is exellent, it is not quite as powerful as the D-360 used in 766's and early 886's, but the fuel economony is better and the 358 tends to last a little longer. Never run it on a dyno, but I suspect it puts out more than the 80 horsepower it is rated at. A MFWD 786 could be considered to be a rare tractor, as only about 1800 786's were ever built total. I've never driven a 06-86 series IH with MFWD, but from what I've heard, the turning radius is not good.
