Any one know about serial numbers on a International model 250..serial number 180 with a letter J behind it? The letter J is confusing to me.

Look for a number in front of the 1, sometimes they were not stamped very well. 1st 240 was 501.

Robert: May I suggest you do a bit more cleaning on that serial tag. I have found that IH tags from late 50s and early 60s were not stamped very deep, thus time has worn numbers away. You may find a 4th number in front of the 180.

I see this with my 130, two of the four digets are almost illegable. I remember my 300 and 560 being much the same, just not stamped as deeply as the old letter series or later 06, 56 and 66 series were. Take care in cleaning tag, I think you will find another number.

CNKS: Great, two guys with the same opinion, always better than one. As I've said many times, I farmed with at least one tractor from every series Letter through to 66 series. 16 Farmalls bought new or near new, and the poorest serial tags for me came from 300, 130 and 560. My Super A tag is still very legible, so is my 140 tag. My 130 tag almost requires a magnifying glass for two of the digets. I can only assume the IH stamps must have been worn and it wasn't in the budget to replace them until 1963.

Robert: Go to left of this page, under Research & Info, click on serial numbers, then click on Farmall or International depending on tractor, then click on 240 or I-240 in the case of a utility. This will give you the beginning serial number for each year tractor was in production. Good luck.

Where exactly is this "serial tag" on the tractor that you're describing? And is there anything else that distinguishes the tractor? I'm a bit lost.

Don't know what you have. IH serials usually started with 501, if not there is usually a 01 in the first serial. Never heard of a 250, 240 starts with 501. I believe there is a 254 -- that was assembled in Japan, I think.

Robert...are you sure about the 250? My Serial Number Guide lists a 240, but no 250. Hugh is right, of course, about the J meaning a Rockford clutch.

David: There is indeed a 250, was built at Doncaster England and was actually called a B-250. Basically it was a utility version of the H with factory 3 point and a British direct start diesel. It had gear driven PTO and same 5 speed as the H and was much the same hp.

Mike Soldan has one of these B-250 tractors.

Hugh, you amaze me with your knowledge of these wonderful red machines. Heck, I happen to live about 35 miles west of CNH, located in Racine, WI. (It seems that the International presence there keeps shrinking; I think they still have their corporate building there and ONE big parts facility west of town, but I'm not sure how much else.) At any rate, YOU should be the one here so we could walk in and remind these folks of the great history and heritage they are lucky to be stewards of. I feel the same way about another machinery giant I was privileged to work for in Racine--Jacobsen mowing/turf equipment. International, Farmall and Jacobsen are all names that are a part of history. David

Robert: J always stands for Rockford clutch in IH tractors.
