Every once in awhile someone comes on this forum discussing or wanting to settle an argument about the highest production tractor ever, or the highest production Farmall.

Here is one for you guys to get your teeth into. What Farmall model was produced in the greatest volume of total horsepower. Just to make myself clear I am talking horsepower per unit times the number of tractors of a given model.

A quick scan of Ken Updike's data book indicates the H still leads, with about 9775000 HP, M 9184760. I did not include the Super series in that calculation -- would probably put the M over the top. If you include the A and it's successors, it might be pretty close -- I didn't do exact figures on that one. I also did not look at many high HP tractors, I don't think IH made enough of them. So, I'll crawl out on a limb without lookin at all the data.

Well Hugh you take the lowly H an multiply it times 400,000 and your gonna get something over 10 million Horsepower. What else is even gonna be close? Do I get the prize?

Howard: Quite frankly, I don't have the answer. My curiosity kind of got going on this from a thread that is now on page 2. I also wonder a bit which on those models have logged the most total horsepower hours.

For example you've got both 806 and 856, each sold about 4,000,000 total hp, but then look at the hours some of those have logged. Quite common to find one with 20,000 hours. Stack that against the H and M, which looks the best. I don't know, and probably no one does.

I've always said, the reason we have so many decent H and M tractors around today, is that they were gassers or gas start diesels and the diesels that followed made the gassers quite inefficient. No one wanted to take the time for a gas start diesel. Just look at discussion on here today, how many folks think a Farmall H should be 25' down the drivway before the 4th cylinder fires the second time? Most Farmall H start up problems could be answered by saying, "Let it warm up".
