Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows where to plumb in an external tank heater on the D239 motor? I would like to get this tractor to start easier in cold weather. I dont like using ether in anything. Tried a lower rad heater and that is usless in 10-20 degree temps. Thanks for any help

Hi JT, there should be a pipe plug on the left side of the block above the injection pump. This goes in the bottom of the tank heater. The other plug is in the water jacket on the front right of the engine by the valve cover and the temperature sender. This connection goes in the top of the tank heater. The best place to locate the tank heater is between the starter and the injection pump and the bottom of the tank heater has to be about the same as the bottom of the starter. It is a bit of a chore to route the top hose in behind the fan to the top right water jacket but it is not impossible.

Should start after being plugged in for 30 minutes with tank heater.

Good luck

JT: Don"t know about your 239 as it"s been awhile since I"ve been around one, plus I never owned one. On the 188 and 282 that preceeded the 239, one could plumb the tank heater between the block drain and a port near the center of the head. I expect you can do the same on the 239.

That set worked well on those older engines. I had one of these on a 6 cylinder Deere as well, plumbed the same. All of them worked well. They were 1500 watt heaters and at -30F they only had to be plugged in 2 hours for an easy start. I had 3 of these heaters in use on my farm at one time, and in all cases block drain was on same side as a port in the head. Made for very easy plumbing. Those heaters will also be labled as to which end up. I think they work best with very simple direct plumbing as the coolant must move by thermosyphon.

Run a hose from the block drain on the left lower side of the block to the inlet side of the heater. Then run the other hose up to the water pump carrier. There is a plug on the left side of the carrier, remove it and install your hose barb. This set up will pull the coolant thru the block and warm it in a short time. Make sure to use the highest wattage heater you can find.
