I posted a few weeks back that my Farmall B that hadn't been cranked in 10 years was not running very well. I have since rebuilt the carburetor, changed the battery, put on new cables and was ready to fire it back up. It had been starting every time. I acccidently left the key on for about 4 hours but I've changed the battery since this incident. The lights come on but when I go to start it, it will not make a sound. I thought maybe the starter had locked up, so I took it off and had it rebuilt. Now after placing it back on, I still get absolutely no sound whatsoever. Right before it started the last time (before the starter rebuild) It made a brief whining noise. Is there anything else that would keep it from trying to start? This is a late forties model Farmall B. Thanks for any advice, I am pretty frustrated.

Thanks for all of the help guys. Since I was off today for MLK, I broke down and took it to a shop. First of all we discovered that the used battery I purchased was dead. Boy don't I feel stupid. The switch on the starter is also acting up a bit. But the good news is that he helped me get it started up. We had to adjust the throttle rod since it was running wide open. One more dufus mistake was the butterfly in the carb was too small in diameter. No wonder it wouldn't run right. He has it purring for me now. However after I brought it home the starter still moans at me a lot when I try to start it. We didn't replace the switch. Is this a switch problem or a problem with my second rebuilt battery purchased today? At least this battery does have a warranty. Again, thanks for all of your help this forum is very educational for a shade tree....

Carpenter,

I think what you are hearing is the starter running but the drive is not moving forward on the shaft and engaging with the ring gear on the flywheel. If you take the starter apart, the drive should be free to rotate and slide out towards the nose cone (part that goes in the tractor) and clean of grit or any other foreign material. Grease, heavy oil, or clutch “dust” will prevent the drive from spinning into and meshing. The physics on how this works is when the starter starts to rotate, the drive wants to remain at rest. If the resistance to spinning is not overcome, the drive moves out into the flywheel and when fully engaged, is forced by the starter shaft to rotate. If the resistance to spinning is overcome (the drive begins to rotate as soon as the starter shaft starts to rotate) then the drive spins right away and never engages with the flywheel. Sometimes light oil on the shaft will sometimes help but too much might cause a buildup.

Hope this helps.

The stock starter system on a B is a very simple setup:

1. Fat cable from + on battery to tractor frame.
2. Fat cable from - on battery to starter button.
3. Fat cable from starter button to post on starter.

That's it. You can only possibly have a problem in one of five places:

1. The cable from the + to ground.
2. The cable from the - to the starter button.
3. The starter button itself.
4. The cable from the starter button to the starter.
5. The starter.

It's GOT to be in one of those five places. There's no voodoo magic involved.

BTW, just because the starter locks up does not mean it needs to be rebuilt. Usually, the problem is caused by a worn Bendix drive and/or worn teeth on the ring gear.

You need to check for voltage at your key starter switch for voltage when it's in the start position. You have a terminal on the switch
that only feeds voltage to the s terminal on your starter solenoid when you turn the key to start if it has a solenoid. If there's voltage on that terminal you may have a bad connection at the starter solenoid or the wire is broken from the switch to the solenoid. If there's no voltage present on that terminal when the key is
in the start position your switch may be the problem. Since your lights are working, you have voltage to the switch. Hal

Carpenter, put your tractor in neutral, take a jumper cable and go from the negative side of the battery to the terminal on the starter, that is putting current directly to the starter and it should spin the engine over. If this occurs you know the trouble is likely in the switch, sounds like with everything you did it should start, remember that tractor is positive ground and your terminals are so installed, maybe others have some ideas about the switch. You can always pull the starter, set it on the bench and using battery cables and a battery you can spin it on the bench so you know there has been no problem develop in the starter. I'm wondering if the 4 hours of ignition left on has burned a wire or a terminal so contact isn't happening...good luck, let us know how you make out...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Usually these problems, though frustrating are not complicated. Probably a connection, cable end or clamp. As mentioned, the starter on a B is easily removed and bench tested.
