IH dropped most, if not all of the letters designating engine fuel with the Super series. As Steven said, some of the kero/dist H's and M's (I would say most) did not have the kerosene or distillate designation. However virtually all (except the Super series) had the X1 designation if they were gas only. It is unlikely, but certainly not impossible) that the tractor in question has a kerosene or distillate engine, as the WWII gas shortage had long since past. Most of the later kero/dist tractors were for export.

I know for a fact that the kero/distillate was an available option through the 350/450 series. Who knows how many were actually produced...

That is true -- my point is there weren't many sold in the US, you are correct that we don't know how many. The later the model the fewer keor/dist were sold.

If original distillate and original engine both tractors will have letter A after engine and tractor serial number.

Two fuel tanks, two holes in hood to accomodate the two fuel tanks,a heat shield around the manifold, shutters on the tractor..a must for distillate operation....Mike in Exeter Ontario

They would have an extra hole in the hood on the magneto/distributor side for the gasoline tank. Or would still have the 1 gallon gasoline starting tank.

Suffix for distillate is X17 (or none at all as in the case of my H)
Suffix for kerosene is X3

If it has an X1 suffix it would have been a gas burner.

I think you have a 54 SH with low-low gear. thats what "M" means. The J means rockford clutch. Andrew

I trying to do some research for a guy I work with. We wnet and Looked at a Super H today. We did right down the serial numbers, and the everything is worn off. the only numbers that can be read off the tag say 22511 M J. The guy says its a 54. I dont recall a small gas tank or shutters, it has a new manifold on it and looks like the one on the site here. I think its a gas tractor form the factory but not sure what does the "M" mean? walt
