I have a farmall 300 row crop and at times it will get stuck in 5 gear. I have to take the shifter off and put it in nuetral, put the shifter back and it works until the next time. my question is the bottom of the shifter worn from front to back or is it worn on the bottom, or both.does anyone know what the specs are for a new one?

Check for any wear on the cross pin which holds the gearshift lever in the casting that bolts to the transmission case [ 3 bolts]. Wear here will affect shifting lockups.

This might not be the case-but if the external adjustments of the TA & clutch are wrong, it will hang up in gear. However, if this is the case it will likely drag in other gears also. To test for this put clutch in with trans in gear on a slight incline; if tractor won't roll down the hill & doesn't want to go to neutral, that's the problem. Easy fix.

Not to take away from the "standard solution" that has been often discussed on this subject - weld up and grind down to fit. I have always wondered why someone hasn't come up with standard measurements for shifters, maybe even a diagram so those of us who have to have the work done can explain to the machine shop exactly what to accomplish. How about it? Anybody got the numbers or a NOS to measure? My nickel Dick Davis

Dick: I agree with you whole heartedly, however it is close to 20 years since I did the last one, thus I just don't remember the exact measurment. I will give you a guess, just to see how close I come when someone does post the exact figure. My guess is 5/16" by 9/16". The only ones I have ever rebuilt are H, 300 probably 3 times, 560 and a couple of offsets.

I'm thinking all H, M, 300, 400, 460, 560, etc. are the same. Offsets and C through 240 may be slightly smaller. I never did record the size of shift lever at the time, but rather went to size of notch in the shift rail of each tractor. I just don't know if they are all the same, not even positive of the ones, that I suggested might be the same.

Carl: I don't remember the exact size, but it should be almost a perfect rectangle looking at it from bottom end. It should also nicely fill the notch in one of the rails. What happens here is the end of shift lever gets egg shaped and will slip out of notch in rail before tractor is completely out of gear. I always build it up by welding so it is oversize, then grind until it shifts smoothly. This will require setting it in place several times to try it until right. The rectangle I described should be very slightly rounded on the corners.

I don't do welding myself, thus had to rely on a welding shop to build it up. I did several of these over the years. We experimented with different rods even used bronze on a couple. I don't know as I ever determined which was best. There are a lot of factors to consider, for example a loader tractor will suffer a lot more wear than one that does nothing but pulling implements all day and maybe only shifting gears half dozen times.
