Hi , Are the live pumps from the factory that go between the distributor and distributor drive a direct bolt-on to a M ? Is that a clear question ? Also - Are there any physical differences between the M&W pump and the one the factory put on or are they the same pump ? I found one in the salvage yard today and I think the tractor was a 3 digit or a SM ( no tag ) . I didn't have time to compare this tractor to other tractors there . This pump may or my not work , I'm going back next Sat. to check it out further . Are rebuild parts or kits available ? And how much should I expect to pay for the pump ? Thanks ...Randy

Hey all , Thanks for the info . Sorry it took me so long to get back here but you know this site moves so fast if you miss a day you miss a LOT ! Had to go to a horse clinic ( seminar ) all day yesterday and learn more about horse care .

I know that the housing on the pump was brite looking so it may have been aluminum but getting to that side of the tractor wasn't easy with all the crud around it and I got there about 30 minutes before they closed for the day so I really didn't have time to climb so does that make it IH ? If anyone see's this this far back in the line - THANKS ...Randy

Jeffs question,on the M&W pump went and looked at mine on the M.The suction line is the one next to the engine block which goes down to a pipe nipple welded into the belly pump and is used for the reservoir. Some numbers on the pump 201px-3hcs4-8r and 45887 m-71

Randy, pumps mounted on tractor,M&W pump hydraulic ports on top. They interchange between M and SM.IH pump for SM through 450 and matching W series the hydraulic ports are on bottom with bolt on manifold or pipes for line hook up.Also has aluminum housing. The IH pump will bolt to M
from engine serial # 228081 produced 1950 and newer, but on some covers the snout on end of pump shaft for hour meter drive if equiped will hit cover before bolts are tight. It can be sawed off in most cases as its not used. Another thing make sure the bottom pump mount bolt nearest to block is not to long.It will hit cam gear and cause metal shavings at the least.Deisel pumps don't work on gas.

On the M&W pumps, which port is the pressure port and which port is the suction. I have one on my Super M and I don"t know which is which. Thanks.

Randy, There is a lot of advice in the archeives here on this. Basically, straight M's did not have the distributor pumps. Super M's and 450's did. If you get one of those pumps you will need to get the front gear cover and cover plate also because the bolt holes won't line up from pump to cover plate and cover. They are just enough different to not work. It is a bit of work to change it all out but doable. Price is relative. Other experts may have more detailed advice to offer.
