Had a new ring gear installed and the started overhauled on a Super A. Everything working fine, for what ever reason the starter now turns, but engine would not start.Found that the ring gear is spinning on the fly wheel. Has anyone ever spot welded the ring gear to the fly wheel with out splitting the tractor? If so, any help would be appreciated.

Someone goofed and drove it on and streched it SOOOOO Oooooo now you will have to split the tractor remove the flywheel lay it down make sure that it is stright and place half inch tack welds about four should do the trick placed at 90 degrees on the back side just make sure that it does not walk on ya .

I think I would call the person that installed the ring gear. You need to heat them to remove
an old ring gear and to heat the new one when installing it. I think someone goofed up for a better word. Hal

Hal,

Sometimes a spun flywheel is just flat an unfortunate occurance. I don't blame the feller for wanting to get 'er out of his hair.

Tackin' it 'taint gonna hurt a thing and will save the price of another flywheel for another possible 20 'er 30 years. :>)

That's what I would do too. If he pulls the starter he may be able to tack it here and then keep hand cranking until he gets enough welds around the circumference. Hal

Oh heck yeah,

If you can reach it, glue it.

Glueing it may not be such a bad idea. If it could be cleaned up thru the starter hole with brake kleen or lacquer thinner and the use Loctite "stud and bearing mount" and slide the ring gear aound the flywheel to get loctite to suck in and be sure the ring gear is pushed back to it lip so runs square and true it should work forever this way. I have never done a ring gear but have glued stuff together that worked that did not have near the surface area the ring gear does. Read the directions on package as for temps.

That's odd, the tolerance on the ring gear for my A is so tight that I had to freeze the flyweel then heat the ring gear with a propane torch just to get it on.

If you weld it, make sure the welding ground is hooked to the flywheel. Otherwise you may be welding through the engine bearings.
