The old thread was getting old so I decided to post a new one to help you out IHnut. Just to add to your madness :)

When the F-series tractors were painted at the factory they had all of their parts attached and run through a paint booth. The red you are seeing is the primer if it is under a part/nut/bolt. I have in my possession an original F-20 block that was still in the crate. The whole block (inside and out) is painted a red primer except where some machining took place. It sounds like most of the parts that were made were painted with the red primer and shipped to Farmall for installation. I'm in the same boat you are in, and while scraping paint I was unable to find gray paint. Eventually, I found a small speck on the corner of the engine. It sounds like the paint would just fall off and did not last long at all. IH had a program that would repaint the old gray tractors red when they were in for service.

I've also found articles that explain IH had to repaint the old gray tractors after six months if they were waiting at the factory outside. IH developed a better paint that would last a year and it was decided to change the color as well. IH wanted their tractors to be more visible on the road. It saved IH alot of money and that is why we have IH red.

Concluision: Not a lot of different paint colors available back in the twenties and early thirties. Even though I would have sworn at one time my tractor had to be red, I've decided that she was gray and repainted with a better paint.

Thanks alot sproutW,
This is my first restoration down to every nut and bolt and I want to be sure to get it right.
Do you have a color gray that you use? What brand?
I don't want it to look like a show car, just like it did when new. I would include a photo but this old brain don't know much about how to do it.
It would help if it were covered with grease.
Thanks again
IHnut

It is likely that is about the time IH stopped using primer. IH 50 was alkyd (synthetic) enamel, and could be used without primer (not saying that it should have been, but IH did it that way). But, I am not sure what the gray paint was. I believe that alkyd enamel was developed in the 30's, perhaps the low quality of the gray paint was due to some other formulation. Alkyd enamel is still being used, and is usually the "IH red" sold in farm stores. IH 2150 currently sold by Case-IH is an "acrylic modified" alkyd enamel. The red paint on the wheels prior to Nov, 1936 was likely a varnish of some sort. The inside of castings are sealed with glyptal?, you say it looked the same inside and out -- could be.

If you would like I can post an email of the engine block. Maybe by a picture you would be able to tell. It all looked the same to me, but I'm no painting expert.

There is no way I could tell, perhaps someone else might have an idea. I think it was and likely still is a common practice to seal the inside of castings, at least those with oil inside, with glyptal (sp?) or a similar product. I don't have a clue if it was used as a primer.

I'm thinking they had to primer many of these parts for storage and shipping purposes before they arrived at the factory for installation.
