Yep, 340's, 460's, and 560s could have either a 12 or a 17 gpm pump. The Y suffix was for the 12 gpm touch-control pump and the Z suffix was for the 17 gpm pump.

Neb,

Early 656 tractors (before serial # 13012) pumped 12 gallon on the front pump and 7 on the rear pump.

All later tractors came with 17 front and 9 rear.

544 should be 'bout the same as the two tractors are pretty much identical except for the engine.

Allan: Are you sure on how you worded that. I think the 17 gallon pump was optional from the beginning. Not 100% certain but my 67 656 had a 17 gallon pump and so did my 560. I know it was optional on the 560. I think the 17 was always optional and later on the 12 was dropped.

I can't picture buyers having been use to a 17 gallon pump with a loader on a 560, being content with 12 gallon on a 656.

Hmmmm,

17 gpm on a 560? Are you sure about that?

I've sure never heard of the option. But, like I say, there's a heck of a lot of stuff I haven't ever heard of. :>)

Just fer the sake of gossip tho, 12 gallon per minute is one heck of a lot of oil; especially back in those days.

My little H runs that old F-11 loader just fine on a 10 gallon pump after the 3.5 gallons have been pulled off for the steering. That leaves 6.5 gallons; no remotes tho.

Guess I just don't know,

Allan

Our 1960 Farmall 460 has the "Z" on the serial number plate.

Allan: Most new tractors that came into our area, came equiped with the biggest volume pump that could be ordered. Looking back, I expect this was driven by the potato industry. I did not buy my 656 new. It was bought new by a potato farmer, and I acquired it when I bought his farm. It had holes drilled in the right flat top fender. It was also equiped with two remote valves, one plumbed to rear and both plumbed to sides for front mounted potato cultivator. I asked about the holes in fender. He mounted a special valve bank on the fender and pluged it into one of the remotes on tractor for operating his potato harvester. I never saw this set up as the potato equipment was all gone by the time I bought the farm. I think he told me this valve bank was 5 spool valves, 2 of which had priority for hydraulic motors.

From this I knew my 656 had a 17 GPM pump as he told me it took that volume to operate the potato harvester. I also had this confirmed as I had to replace the pumps on both 560 and 656 during the life of the tractors. IH parts man told me they didn't even stock the 12 gallon pumps, as he wasn't aware of one in the area.

Forgot,

3.5 gallon out of the front pump is ear marked for the steering.
