Whew!

Silly thing fought me all the way, but we finally got 'er stretched out a bit. Still not wild about that silly wide turning radius, but it "feels" somewhat better now than it did. Picture shows it "at the stops".

I dunno, if I run across the correct front end somewhere, I might have to swap it out.

The good news is that the old engine and tranny just click 'em off smooth as silk and it pulls really nice. It's gonna make a real good hayin' tractor, me thinks.

I may have been misled but I have been always told that the correct steering geometry ( Ackerman) will cause the (inside wheel while turning) to turn sharper than the ( outside wheel). They look like they are operating right to me.

Yes Sir,

It operates just fine. It is just that the old 806 front end will not cut as sharp as the newer styled units.

Allen it looks to me like you still have geometry problems. In your pic it looks like the left wheel is turned farther than the right one!

I know; and that darned front tube looks bent in that picture too. :>(

Maybe my ol' camera didn't wanna work this morning, 'er something. :>)

Naw, I think that part of it is okay; its just the wrong throw on that style of front end 'cause she sure don't wanna cut very tight.

That inside wheel ought to be leaning into the turn more and both of the wheels ought to be coming around another 5 degrees or so.

As for the turning problems you have... Friend added a Schwartz wide front to his 504 and it wouldn't turn short enough, so we lengthened the steering arm that comes down out of the bolster.

Either a longer arm in the middle, or shorter arms on the outsides and it will turn sharper.

I would try to make a plate that bolts to the center steering arm and moves the inside ends of the tie rods more towards the rear of the tractor (in effect lengthening the arm). Just an idea if you don't want to spend the $$ on a front end.

If you don't get what I'm saying, post up a picture of the center linkage and I'll try to better explain it...

Hi Ol' Steve,

Yes Sir, I gotcha.

But since I'm the current president and sitting treasurer/clerk of the "Correct Police Association", this thing is kinda workin' in my craw just a little anyways.

Just 'taint right/proper/correct as it should be, ya know? Bugs me every time I look at it. :>)

Not to mention,

It just ‘tisent dignified. Those old coyotes out there in the wilds really deserve better treatment and a higher level of respect than this. :>)

(I just love to hear myself whine!)

I knew you would like that Hydro. We had a 656 Hydro for over 15 years with the gas engine. It was the best haying and spraying tractor a guy could ask for. Also great for my mom and sister to drive. The engine was rebuilt 3 times, but the transmission was never touched, and it was used to pull the vibrashank and plow for a year when our diesel went down for repairs. I still miss that tractor, and its been gone almost 8 years now. Of course, the 105 horsepower 806 Diesel we got afterward helped with the separation anxiety!!! Wow, apparently its been a while since I've been on here, that tractor looks a lot different than when I saw it last. Great job Allan. Whats up with the front end? (like I said, I haven't been here in a while)

Hi Ol' Bud,

This tractor is a junk yard dog and it's got a front end off of an 806 under it.

The geometry is all wrong. Just doesn't feel like a Farmall, ya know? Won't spin on one wheel and suck 'er around the way it should. :>(

Needs this style under it to be right.

Oh, now I understand. Our 656 didn't have the right front end either. It had been converted from narrow front to a wide front with an aftermarket front end by the previous owner. I think it was a Schwartz. It seemed to turn a bit shorter compared to our 806 with the IH front end, but it might just be my imagination, its been a while.

Yes Sir,

You nailed it.

I've got a real bad habit of comparing every darned tractor in the world to that old 656. And even tho they still had the steel tube, those things would all but turn back on their own wheel tracks.

I wonder if after the 56s, IH decided to do something about those front ends on account of the radius. You are about the 10th guy that has told me that their 06 just didn't have the sharpest crank to 'em.

When they went to the cast iron outfits, pulled the stops out of the gungeon and put 'em out on the spindles, then they would pull on around with just that "little extra" throw to the steering arms.

I haven't priced a front end yet, but I 'spose the yards are probably gonna want a grand?

If you wanna turn sharp, you could always go back to the narrow front. Mr. Haney will drill one back wheel into the ground without my having to touch a brake pedal. ;-0
