Finally got the tractor started and running last night and took a picture of the ring gear teeth which shows wear. I don’t know if this is extreme or just typical. Thanks to all of you who helped me on the electrical and what step of actions to take.

In any case for someone looks through this (archieves) with the same problems, here are the steps I went through:

Situation- Bought tractor (49 M) with little knowledge which had a small and weak 12 volt battery hooked up to a 6 volt system with H-4 magneto and generator. This tractor was still operating on original wiring.

Tractor worked for 5 months with this battery and then it just wouldn’t start. The steps included (with direction from the good folks here: 1) –Replace with Good Battery cables (at least double 00’t) and clean connections with a new 6-volt battery having the biggest CCA available. I bought a with a new ignition button from TSC specified for 6-volt. No start

2) –Took the starter off and then put it back on, and rocked the tractor backwards in fourth gear and in fifth gear. No start

3) -Took starter into the shop and the drive and rings needed to be fixed.

4) -Reinstalled the starter and it turn over but then a snap occurred at the top pole of the ignition button. Tightened the connections and nothing. Took the starter off and back in and the mechanic goof around said here you go.

5) -Reinstalled the starter after cleaning the surface extremely well. Reattached the wiring and twisted off the top pole of the ignition button. Looked over at my grandpas tractor (I’m trying to restore this one and I don’t know much about tractors) which had a rusted ignition button still on it. Took it off and stuck grandpas on this one. Reattached the wires and moved the throttle down and hit the button. It turned over. 6) -It turned with no sparks, so I turned the gas on, moved the throttle up and hit the petal shortly. Turned the throttle down and hit it shortly. Moved the throttle to the middle and hit the button shortly, it started right up.

Congratulations on getting through it! At least you have the piece of mind knowing you got it done yourself! It's good that you posted the complete chain of events, since the problems you experienced are encountered by hundreds of people annually. Hopefully it will help em out. Too often I see people start cussing a tractor because it is a 6V system, instead of troubleshooting the problem and fixing what is required...they convert it to 12V and then discover something still isn't right!

Good job well done.

Billy

Thanks Billy,

It was also kinda fun, in that, the last piece to get it started came off my grandpas old tractor (been sitting a fence line for 25 years) which is the whole reason I bought a working M to begin with- so I could learn about Farmall M's and fix up my grandpas. Pretty handy having two M's

I'm sure several other things are gonna come up. Just don't want to flood this website with to many question without looking through the archieves first. My question are so simple to so many on this website and they are generous by answering the same thing again.

Hey Fisherman feels GOOD doesn't it. Now Grandpas "M" doesn't seem quite the same task anymore does it? The feeling I get after an accomplishment no matter what it is just seems to make the next job easier to attack. Have fun with Grandpas "M".

Well, it might have taken a while, but you got through it and now you have a tractor with electric start. I don't think that the wear on the ring gear is too excessive. It seems to me that the ring gears on our W6 and M look pretty much the same, and ours still work just fine, although they do jam every once in a long while.

Case NH has a new starter drive (rumor from this forum) that is far better than the inertia drives commonly installed, or OEM/Delco.
