Mornin' All,

Was talking to the local red mech yesterday and he tells me that my problem with the hitch falling when the tractor is shut off is probably a bad cylinder/piston rather than just a piston seal.

Says they will score the inside of the cylinder and that the whole she-bang has to be replaced?

Anybody else ran into this lately?

Allan

Had a 856 that split the lift cylinder useing a 4 bottom roll over plow in heavy gumbo while useing the draft control.I have a 1206 now acting up ,it gets the hicups and settles down after you shut it off ,I think new sealing rings will cure that problem their only 40 years old.

Had a late model 1486 that ruined two sets. First set the housing split and scored the cylinder in the process and the second one the piston cracked and scarred the cyinder bore. They are the only ones we've ever replaced, never even had to reseal any of our others. Of course about everything hydraulic on that tractor was replaced and re-replaced. Jake

Allan,

I would tend to agree with Billy on this one. I just recently had two of them apart down to the lift cylinder (on Olivers). I had them apart for replacing hydraulic pumps. Both of them drop down when shut off. I did not see any scoring in either cylinder.

I suppose it would be possible, but out of all the cylinders I have had apart and rebuilt, I have never seen a piston seal score a hydraulic cylinder. I would be more apt to blame the scoring of a clyinder on contaminants in your hydraulic oil.

Good luck!

Billy

He may be right but more likely to be the seal. I.ve pulled the heck out of 3pt and have never scored a cylinder. I've had several worked on and just replaced seals. Just my thoughts Allan.
