Hello, I just aquired a model 31 or at least that's what it says on the tag, I was wondering where the serial number is located it isn't on the tag? How do you remove the flywheel to get at the points, I was wondering if you pry out on the flywheel and tap the shaft to remove it, after removing the nut ?
Thanks Mark

Thanks for the information. There is a plate on the side of the flywheel is pretty easy axcess and the points are actuated in a different way than what I'm used to. Thanks Mark

I used to have some Maytags, a couple of singles and a couple of twins, but that was a long time ago.

IIRC, the "Model 31" may be more the model number of the washer itself that the motor was used with than the actual motor.

The common model numbers were:

Model 92... single cylinder

Model 72... twin cylinder

I know the flywheels are easy to break, so be carefull. Is it a single, or a twin cylinder? I can't remember about the twins, but the singles had a plate on the flywheel that could be removed to access the points without removing the flywheel. Are there holes where the pulley mounts you can use with a puller?

From time to time, there is someone on ebay selling tools for setting the points, and it seems to me he or someone else MAY be selling a puller to safely remove the flywheel.

Google "Maytag Collectors", and all kinds of info will come up. There's one site in particular that is used to look at once in a while that had all kinds of repair and tech info. I don't see it in my bookmarks, and a quick Google search did not turn it up, so either it's gone or I am not finding it.

The serial number is stamped on the rim of the flywheel. If I remember right it should pop off. Click below for a good source of parts and info on Maytags. Have fun, Ed
