I used to have some Maytags, a couple of singles and a couple of twins, but that was a long time ago. IIRC, the "Model 31" may be more the model number of the washer itself that the motor was used with than the actual motor. The common model numbers were: Model 92... single cylinder Model 72... twin cylinder I know the flywheels are easy to break, so be carefull. Is it a single, or a twin cylinder? I can't remember about the twins, but the singles had a plate on the flywheel that could be removed to access the points without removing the flywheel. Are there holes where the pulley mounts you can use with a puller? From time to time, there is someone on ebay selling tools for setting the points, and it seems to me he or someone else MAY be selling a puller to safely remove the flywheel. Google "Maytag Collectors", and all kinds of info will come up. There's one site in particular that is used to look at once in a while that had all kinds of repair and tech info. I don't see it in my bookmarks, and a quick Google search did not turn it up, so either it's gone or I am not finding it. Link
