Cleaned up timing cover, installed new front seal, put on new gasket. bolted cover back onto motor.

With use of special attachment I made, pressed pully back on crankshaft using porta power.

Bolted polster back on front of engine. Tractor is now back to the point that it can be moved on it own wheels.

Water pump and housing are cleaned and ready to be install. Have all gaskets made, so will be putting pump on later today.

Can anyone help? I am about to replace rear axle seal on a Farmall Super C. Had a serious oil leak .Noticed a lot of play in axle bearing .most of the play is between inner race and the axle shaft. Can't understand it. Everything is well lubricated. The new seal will be destroyed if there is wobble in th e axle

Hope you didn't damage the seal when you pressed the front pully back on. The Service Manual says to leave the front cover loose until after you have the front pully back on so as to not damage the new seal. This is good advice, don't ask how I know this.

John, I thought of that, poured oil on seal and seal surface area of pulley, just as I used to do on small block chevies. Had oil all over front of cover and pan....Thanks for the warning

Good grief! That's just exactly what I did to my Super C the last couple of days. I did the oil pan gasket too. Got her started today. Hope to put the radiator on tomorrow and take her for a drive before the bitter cold of winter sets in again here in Iowa.

Leon, we didn't do the oil pan, as this engine looks like it has had some major work done to it.

Will be putting on new valve cover gasket, as broke it when I pulled valve cover to have a look. Top of head and valves springs and inside cover was very clean.

I found quite a bit of sludge inside the valve cover of mine, but then it had been running without a thermostat so not surprising. The sludge on top is what promped me to open up the bottom end. There it was clean as a whistle, but when I put the pan back on it began leaking like a sieve at the front of the pan or bottom of the front cover - couldn't tell which! I sort of suspected that the 'crankshaft seal oil retainer palte' (6 100 D) which sort of 'floats' in there got disturbed so I pulled it out and used new seals/gaskets on it wilh a liberal amount of Permatex. So I'm anxious to get her running to see if the oil leak has gone away. I didn't leave the front cover loose 'till the crank pulley was in the seal because I used Permatex on that cover too. I don't think that cover can move around much anyway with the stud and all the bolts. Hope I got by with it. We'll see. I used a new crankshaft pulley as the old one had a crank ear broken off and the seal groove was pretty bad.

What did you decide to do about the rear axles?

K.B., I am going to cut them off. Just haven't had the time and weather wasn't helping matters either. Hopefully will get it done Friday.

trying to decide exactly what piece of equipment I am going to use. Have not discided between cut off wheel on grinder, or Porta band or regular metel band saw.

Had to redeck my 18 ft flat bed trailer this week. Going after a tractor of different color tomorrow.

Keith,I assume yours has the long axles?? I missed the first part of this story :) Long axle story: My wifes grandpa bought a `53 Super C brand new with the long axles..no trailers around back then,so he was gonna drive it home, about 7 miles.. clipped the edge of a bridge with the axle and rolled the SC before he got it home, nobody hurt, just pride and tractor..so it got a new hood, grille, radiator and steering pedestal before it ever made it to the farm.. Wifes dad still has and uses that old Farmall, but if it ever completely dies,I'm gonna restore it..I hope

Thought you might enjoy the axle story..

Tim, that is what I am worried about with the boy driving it. He is handi-capped and afraid he will be taking out fences, post, cars and my truck. And worse, ME..lol

I know about them long axels, hooked steel post last winter with one on my VAC. But it only has one long axel and I would forget which side it was on,,waalla!! out came post, fencing and anything alse that got close..:>(

thanks for the story...lmao

Portaband is quick, but the cutoff blade will probably do a cleaner, straighter cut (even if you have to use more than one), with a little grinding and/or filing to clean up the edges. To me, there's not much worse than seeing an axle on a restored machine that has obviously been hacked off. Make it look as close to factory as possible.

Peabody, What I am going to do is take my pipe cutter and scribe a mark around axel where I am going to cut it. That way I get a true and reasonably accurate cut.

I'm like you, if I can't do it right then I won't do it.

Thanks for the heads up.

I wish, need to get a good day to power wash and maybe even steam clean with my "old" cleaner (but it still works).

Needs back tires, they are absolutely shot.

Shawn and Sheana need to finish cleaning the trans, I need to make new cover gasket. Also I need to do a little welding on bracket for shifter rails. One step forward two backwards...lol
