As some of you are aware I've been looking at some IH hydro tractors to use for transplanting. I've gone to see 2. Both were gas models (Hydro 70 and a 656 hydro). Neither would start when I was there. The 70 is now running but I was told it has some problem with the manifold or gasket. The 656 I went to see was at a dealership I often deal with and have really gotten good service from. It was sitting outside with the gas off. When they tried to start it they turned the gas on and it flooded almost immediately. They couldn't get it to fire even after turning the gas off. They told me those old updraft carburators flood easily and if I want to hear it run to let them know a day ahead and they would pull it inside and get it started. I don't think I want to mess with a tractor that is that hard to start. In all fairness though it was cold and damp and it had been sitting outside. My question is do you think it is carburator design (my case 630 and 200 are both updrafts and they will start ok) or does the carb just need rebuilt or should I just assume I'm not supposed to buy a gas hydro at this time. Price was good on both but the 656 was really good. Thanks for your thoughts.

Phil
PS
I'm posting this on both the IH and Tractor Talk boards.

I have a 70 gas and it starts very easily. The only thing is you have to choke it for about one revolution hot or cold. I use it every day on my feeder wagon.

It's not the carbs that are keeping the tractors from starting, it's the fact that both tractors have been left outside, neglected, and have not been properly maintained in quite some time.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the IH updraft carburetor system. If there was, they wouldn't have used it from 1939 through 1979 on tractors ranging in size from the 8HP Cub through the 95HP 856.

Carbs can be repaired and tuned.

My limited experience says that the 56 has a stuck float in the carb. Fairly common event with one 300 I know. Usually a tap with a pair of plyers on the carb body overcomes the difficulty. My nickel Dick Davis

i have 3 656 gas hydros. they all start any time of the year (which is why i bought them- we feed cows with them). i'd say the problem on the one you looked at would be solved if they would change or rebuild the carb. the bigger issue would be the condition of the hydro, whether it slips or not. you can get away for transplanting with a hydro that isn't pristine;one that will slip going uphill in high range, likely wouldn't slip in low range when you weren't trying to set speed records. but the price should reflect the condition of the hydro, much more than the (relatively) low cost of a new carb or rebuild. hth.

I believe that the problems associated with the carbs are irrelevant. Choose the tractor with the best mechanical history and the lowest hours. As a condition of purchase have them replace the carb, or repair the starting issue (which ever you buy). If they won't do that, get an estimate of the repair and have them reduce the price as much. You are not buying a lump of metal, you are buying a tractor (operational). A non running tractor is at least 25% less valuable than one that runs and can be operated on site to check systems and functionality noise and leaks.
JimN for a dime of opinion.
