How do you get an F-12 to start with the crank cold? I have cussed an swore up and down this thing. Somedays it starts first or second pull of the crank, other days you can drag it around the yard for an hour before it starts. What is the trick?

Make sure you retard the timing abit when starting. Mine wouldn't start unless you did.

After mine has sat for any amount of time, I do this FIRST:
-open the petcock on the fuel bowl of the carb. If no fuel comes out, I've got a few minutes of canking until the pump gets the fuel up. When it starts running out, close the petcock and choke NO MORE THAN 2 CRANKS. Open choke and it fires right off. Worth a try...

Does it have a cast iron protrusion from the hood with a pipe plug in it?

Mine does, fill it with fuel to prime the carb and it fires right up. Don't fill and I can never start it with the crank...

my crude arrow points to what I'm talking about:

Mine doesn't have that on it. Mine is a 1938. I would love to find a front wheel like yours. My other F-12 has that, but I thought it was some sort of a presure regulator. The 1938 F-12 with the starting problem is a factory gas burner with high alt. pistons, and my other is a 1935 with kerosene attatchment. When you crank mine you can smell gas in the exhaust pipe, so I was thinking maybe I don't have something set right. I usually have the best of luck with the choke full on, throttle half open, and mag lever about 1/4 off full retard.

Mine came from Minnesota, I think... Muddy, wet areas were more likely to have the single wide front because the dual wheels would plug up with mud.

Mine's a 35 so some stuff is different. The thing that is circled is the return part of the fuel system. Fuel is pumped into that small tank and when the carb gets full, the fuel runs back into the tank. The F-14 doesn't have that and starts on the 2nd click every time...

Still prefer my H for simplicity over this fuel system.

DONT choke it! Your flooding it. On my 14 I set the mag just short of grounding, throttle 1/4 to 1/2,pull up on the crank slowly until the impulse is about to click then a sharp fast jerk and she usually fires on the third pull. You may need to go back into the carb and lower the the float just a tad!

i just went through this on mine. i had to rebuild the mag. not a strong enough spark consistantly. then fine tune the timing. now it fires up nice. pg

well, the mag was dead when I got it, and I filed the points and away I went! Where can you get points, cap, and rotor for an IH F4? I was going to put a Bosch on it, but it doesn't have an impulse so I put it on ebay instead.
