Ok time to tell me how to replace the main bearing

Ok time to fill me in on the replacing the main bearings on a C263. With the crank still in the block and the block still in the frame.
I just got to try that. Sorry tractor vet. Sure that will make you growl but I just got to try that.

Kelly I would agree with the other guys on this old an engine. But It can be done, I did many in frame overhauls, but on first overhauls.

Have you made up a set of pins to alighn the rear main bearing cap yet? My manual shows them in use but does not say what size they are. Shouldn't be to hard I guess just try drill bits until they fit tight.

It's the IH Blue Ribbon emgine manual. If you look at your rear main bearing cap there are two holes were it meets the block on each side. They are plugged with a rubber plug and look to be about 5/16?. In the manual it shows how to install the cap with two alighnment rods. They are listed a a special IH tool. May be the tractor vet or someone will know the correct size. It also states that a slide hammer with an adapter is required to pull the rear cap off as its a light press fit.

I would agree with captaink on pulling that engine
block. A good time clean all water passages and oil. You can then measure the rod and main journals. It will be easier to work on too. Hal

That's one of the most important parts in the engine. New cam bearings are a must for good oil pressure. I never liked doing an engine rebuild twice on the same engine. Hal

Kelly,

I’m going to throw a couple more things at you to consider.

How long has it been since that block has had the water passages really cleaned out good? That’s what I thought. One thing that I didn’t notice anybody mention (since early today) in the reasons for a burned valve was poor water circulation resulting in hot spots in the head and block.

It will also be a lot easier to do a good job replacing that rear main seal if the block is out.

You will make the final decision, since it is your time and money going into it.

The easiest way to remove them is with an aluminum pop rivet that has the steel pin pulled out. Just make sure you roll the bearing out the lock tab side. By the time you are done laying under it and having it drip oil in your eyes you will wish you had pulled the engin though. Jake

you loosen the caps and put a cotter pin in the oil hole and spin it out. it's still better to split it and put a new rear seal in.

FAR BETTER than using a cotter pin, use a short length of brass brazing rod. That way, there is no chance of nicking or scratching the crankshaft or the bore in the block, as could be done with a steel cotter pin.

Thanks sounds simple. HAHAHHAHHAA Thats until I get at it.

I know it would be better to just remove the engine. But I will let that sleeping dog lie for now. I know if I busted her in half I would be throwing more money in there. Well wile I got her apart I might as well replace this..... Next thing you know I am down to the pto unit.
been there done that.

I did take note wile doing this. A 706 would be a piece of cake to split. They engineered that thing to come apart. Not like my 400.
