I'm going to look at a 340 this week that is for sale cheap. Any opinions on 340's or advice on anything to look out for? I'm told it has single front wheel. Can this be swapped for NFE or WFE? What about availability of parts?

If it has a torque amplifier be sure to check it's operation real good. I'v never had to buy a rebuilt one but I've heard they are around $700. Check the gas tank for leaks, the way they are enclosed around the middle where the welded seam is some people would not clean this area once in a while and dirt, dust, leaves, critter nests would build up in this area and if moisture got in here it will rust out the gas tank from the outside in. I've had mine for about 5 years now and am quite pleased with it. With it's short wheelbase it gets around the barn lot real good.

the biggest thing about 340s is the reverse is much slower than most tractors. so if you were planning to put a back blade on it for plowing a long driveway, you'd lose your patience easily waiting to get to the other end. parts availability, etc shouldn't be much different than any other 45 year old models.

I had a 340 utility a few years ago. The hydraulic suction was on the right on the transmission case. If the tractor got a little unlevel the oil would run away from the suction strainer and the pump would get a gulp of air. Many times I had to unhook from my implement, pull to level ground and crack the pressure side of the pump to get the oil flowing again. I read somebody say they put a lot of extra oil in to help that problem. I'm sure glad I got to where I could afford a newer tractor.

We have had a 340 for the last fifteen years, and its always done what we needed it to do. we use it on a small hobby farm, mainly for plowing the driiveway cleaning the barn, etc. Every so often we even use it to pull an IH disc and squarebaler. It has always worked great, never had any major problems. had to rewire it, rebuild raditator and lift cylindor on it once and that was it. Hydralics and everything work fine. Sometimes it doesnt like to start in the winter but thats it. the 340s are great little tracors.

Had a 340 for a few years, it was a great little tractor to rake hay and move wagons. It always had hydraulic problems though, sometimes they would work and sometimes they wouldnt, i could never figure it out.. i guess this problem was very common on the 340. Yes you can put a different front end on it...some parts are easy to get like tune up stuff . tractor supply has a few things for these tractors. Mine had a wide front and i sold it for 1800...good luck
