Took the head for my 706 into the machine shop today. Decided to just get the whole thing redone.
New valves, seats guides the works. Price is $575
Didnt seem too high but I dont know.
He said the new Valves are suppose to be better with unleaded gas. Is that true? Does that mean 87 octain gas? :-)

Time to re-bust a myth: Octane and lead address two completely different issues.

Increasing the octane level in the gas does NOTHING to protect the valves and valve seats. Now I may be perpetuating another myth here, but as I understand it, the cure for this is to have "hardened" valve seats installed at the next valve job.

What octane does is help prevent preignition in high-compression engines.

don't let them B/S ya as the exhaust valver are stelite from the factor and that seams a bit high as my price book for the valve kit and it does come in a kit all valves, springs, keepers, guides, and springs and locks for 285 so some one is getting rich on the other work .Good honest shops are getting harder to find.

Thanks Vet. They have it now so not going to help me on this one.
I am sure this is not the last head I will be doing though.
Getting harder to find Machine shops, SO I guess the ones left get to jack up the labor.
You should have seen the differential on prices I was told for a engine rebuild.
$1800 was the lowest and $6000 was the highest.

The shop charges $25 to hot dip and magnaflux. I might have to keep my eye out for some old machine tools and learn how to do it my self.

Whatever octane it needed before, is the minimum it will require now that it's sealing better, unless it had a lot of carbon build up. The new valves may be stellite and are much more wear resistant. 575.00 for a valve job with guides seats and valves is about right. Jake

They were stelite from the factory and a 263 requires 93 octain min.
