W6 carb problems

Well, after timing the engine it runs, barely. I can get the tractor to run at low idle with some missing but when I try and give it gas it backfires and sputters out. It sounds like its pulling very hard as it tries to accelerate but then dies off very quickle. If I don't throttle back down the motor dies. I pulled apart the carb just before putting it back on and checked the float/seat and tried to clean out all the little holes. I can verify the carb is getting plenty of gas to it as the line is clean, the gas is fresh, and when the drain is opened on the carb plenty of gas flows out. Anyhow, I'm kinda stumped with the tractor now. If you may remeber from a posting of mine from last week. The magbeto on this tractor is an H4 with the 10 degree spark and not the 35 degree rotation that most H4s have. This very well may be the problem but I have no way of testing it against a regular H4.

Brasscreek, I would go with Rusty Farmall's assessment. When I have the mag off of my M I put it back on , centered and start the tractor, then I rotate the mag until the engine has a nice "roll" to it and that is where the tractor will run best and all the fancy timing equipment won't change where I set it by ear. In all honesty, I can say that I have never timed a Farmall engine according to the book, I always just rotate the distributor one way or the other until I have it purring.

I have very little experience with a magneto, but the stmptoms you desribe are the same symptoms you will get with a distributor if the timing is greatly retarded. I am pretty sure that your carburetor is not at fault. You might try loosening the mag at its mounts and advancing the timing that way, just rotate the mag until the engine runs like it should.

My manual says magneto lag angle should be 35, if yours is 15, I'd say thats your problem.
