I have a 450 Diesel that has a cracked head. It seems to close up once it is good and warmed up. My question is: Is it okay to run tha tractor with a cracked head? Someone told me that you run the chance of destroying the motor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The best thing to do is either replace the head or have it set out to be repaired there are several places around the country that can fix that head , there are several main reasons that they crack is that they are not warmed up correctly and not cooled down before shutdown or run low on water or they overheated or stalled in the field and the gas tank was out of gas and could not be restarted and in a situation like that combustion chamber temps. go way up and this is not good . I ran and out 450 Diesel for years and always made sure that the starting tank was full and always let it warm up before putting it to work and would allow it to ideal till the temp gauge was down on cold before i shut it down and would alway shut it down on the diesel side and yea i know somebody is going to tell me that i was doing it wrong but buy switching back over on gas it caused the combustion chamber to heat back up and that is not what you want and that tractor is still running and i sold it over 35 years ago and it is still in the area. Tryed a couple times to buy it back and he just will not get rid of it even offered him a 706 diesel even up swap .

I would check that engine oil for any antifreeze.

I think it depends on where the crack is, and how large it is. If, for example, the crack went into the coolant or oil galleries, that would probably ruin the engine.
