Significance of Glow Plug meter reading

On my 340D I have the standard glow plug meter and push button down below to hold in to energize the plugs and the needle swings all the way to the right. When I let go of the button, the neddle on the gauge only returns to the center of the three white dots on the guage. Seems like I remember someone posting here about that may indicate something was defective with one or more of the glow plugs. Mine have were put in new during a complete overhaul and only have maybe 25 starts on them. Any help guys?

If the needle does not go back when you release the plug button, sounds like a bad gage to me. I have a TD-340 crawler and the glow plug gage is long gone, but the system is wired so the glow plug current goes through the ammeter. I believe the glow plug gage is just an ammeter and measures the current drawn by the plugs. So when you release the button, opening the circuit, the gage should go back to zero. My manual only states that how far the gage deflects shows the plugs are working. If your tractor starts OK, the glow plugs are likely fine. You can check each one by disconnecting all but one and then checking what the meter reads, should show one good. Then disconnect that one and connect each of the other three one at a time the same way and check them. You can also check with an ohm meter. You should get between 2 and 3 ohms resistance between the glow plug spade connector and a good ground. If the ohm meter shows a high resistance, the plug is bad.
