I can't believe I did this but I put a new 8 volt battery in my 53 Super M and reversed the polarity on the cables. Guess I wasn't paying attention. Anyway, tractor started fine and ran well. I found the problem the next day when I went to start the tractor and noticed the mag switch had been left out and thought I had drained the battery. Went to put the battery charger on it and kept kicking the safety on the charger. Put a different battery in and CORRECTLY connected the cables and it started and ran fine. COuld I have done any damage??? What a dummy!!!

I repolarized the generator as suggested and now the needle on the ampmeter stays toward the negative or discharge side. I haven't checked the voltage yet but wwill do that. If the regulator is messed up, where is a good source for a new one. Many thanks.

Because of our lack of history on the unit, I will start here. If the battery in the tractor was installed with negative ground when you bought it, and the electrical system was working, then they repolarized the gen, for neg ground and used a neg ground regulator. At that time they reversed the leads to the amp meter to have it show correctly with the opposite polarity. If you now have it turned around to pos ground, the replacement vr will be wrong polarity and the amp gauge will be backwards as well.
I hope this sheds light, if not let us know in a new post, not this one, Thanks JimN

Only damage would have been to the voltage regulator. It may or may not have occurred. You should repolarize the generator, though.

If it charges now, and the voltage is 9.5 volts (assuming 8 volt battery) there was little if any damage. If it is charging, the generator is polarized already, If not, CNKS is correct.
