It was $107.13

As I"ve said before, I"m fairly accustomed to dealer prices on parts since I"m no stranger to the parts counter, but once in a while a price just kind of floors me!
By the way, there is nothing obsolete about this part either!
Paul

For a project, I need a spin-on bypass oil filter head. It's a simple casting, 2 threaded ports, restrictor is built into the filter.

WIX has one, my WIX jobber quoted about $25.00, but it turns out he can't get one for 2 to 3 weeks through his supplier.

Deere uses the exact same base on certain tractors... the filters interchange... the head is readily available from Deere... for $140.00.

Sounds a bit extreme to me, but I guess things like this are the norm now!

Thats why I make a few phone calls and also look at a couple places before buying parts. A part like that would probably be $2 at an auto parts store. I know from your picture it looks like some fittings I have gotten from a parts store before.

The fitting itself is a fairly standard hydraulic fitting, but the check ball inside is rather specialized I think. I have a feeling that this particular part would be hard to get elsewhere.
That is true though especially with things like bearings. I"ve found that they can be had for less from other sources.

Actually, NONE of that is shipping. I ordered so many things on that invoice that they started a second page. Shipping charges are usually added on the bottom, but I don"t even see it on this invoice. Maybe once you get over $500, they don"t charge for shipping- don"t know. The parts people at this dealer have been nice to work with. Many times if I need a bolt or a grease zirk, they just throw it in no charge with the rest of the order.

Yeah Paul,

I think after you cross the first $10K line in repairs, it kind of "numbs" ya to the shock effect.

The partsman then picks up on this and feels sorry fer ya. :>)

Yeah, maybe I should go in there with a dazed look on my face more often!
Last year I talked to the head mechanic a bit about some technical issues and they sent me a bill for $35. None of the custom guys that I"ve worked for get charged for questions. I don"t think that they like that I do my own repair work. Thing is, I"m a small business and need to be efficient or I"ll go out of business. Then they wouldn"t even have my several thousand $ of parts business.
How"s that Hydro? Just driving in reverse yet? It"s got to be something simple!

Paul, I see on the parts package the dealer name "D & D Equipment". Are you by chance from the Chilton,WI area? I live 2 miles north of Sherwood at the top of Lake Winnebago. I go to D & D once in awhile and like their partsmen-they`ll look for old parts and don`t act like I`m a bother to them. Mark

Hi Mark,
Yup, that"s the same D&D equipment. I"m over in Valders, about 20 miles east of Chilton. I"m on a first-name basis with Tom, Lauri, and Dan, the parts people. They are really good to work with.
I get through Sherwood often enough on 114. E-mail your address to me so I can come and take parts off your tractors! LOL! That way I don"t have to go to D&D so often!
Seriously, drop me a line if you"d like.
Paul

Paul: I didn't see the item in time to make a guess, however in all honesty I would have been in the $40. - $50. range. I made a little trek before Christmas, stopped at two parts places, CaseIH and a local after market guy. Really didn't need or buy that much, 3 oil filters, 0 rings, 3 little gaskets, 2 gear shift knobs and a lens for Super A light. When I got home I'd spent $150.

We are now starting to see the real effect of higher energy prices. Back 4 months ago, a lot of folks were saying, what's a few more bucks to fill up the family buggy. I said at the time, wait until business and industry have to pass along their increased costs. I predicted back in Sept 05, "we are going to see a 25% increase in the cost of living in the next year." I'm not sure I was right, I may have been low. You just take a hard look at some of the items you buy every week. Inflation is running rampent in the past 6 months. It's been 75 to 78 years since North America saw this type of inflation, and you know what took place back then.

Inflation?...Yesterday, fuel prices went up here from .10 to .20 per gallon. The reason given by the local wholesaler is: "We are trying to recover some of the rise in transportation costs".
Sounds like the dog chasing his tail type thinking.

Hi Hugh, how are you?
Yes, I am the product of parents who lived through the great depression, so I am very frugal. I save most everything and I drive two pickups for my businesses- one with 300,000 miles, the other with 441,000 miles. Could be that I am married to someone who is not quite like that! LOL. It"s true though; I"ve had to raise my prices for my hauling business 15 to 20%. However, as a farmer, what do we do, say to the Co-op "This year I have to get more for my soybeans. Fuel is up, ya know". I guess it"s just one of those things.
Parts are up too, but it bugs me when stuff made in China costs as much as everything else. The local farm store used to have shoes made in the US (WI even) for $75 to $90. Now they have shoes made in China for $75 to $90. You have to look real hard to find the US ones.
To be fair, the quality of stuff coming from China has improved in the last couple of years.
Paul

Here in rural Iowa we heat our home with natural gas,pay so much each month for 12 months, they raised it from $68 to $96 per month. One he!! of a jump. These companys dont screw around with a 2 or 3 dollar raise anymore.

I got a carb kit and a lower hose for my case sc a month or two back and it cost me 104 dollars for both items. The kit in my opinion wasn't even a complete kit, no shafts or mixture screws.

COUGH-CHOKE-GASP!!!! Wow! That's about $75.00 higher than my guess!

You say there's a spring and a ball inside that thing? They must be made of some special alloy brought back from the Moon by NASA....

A similar spring/ball device- a residual pressure valve designed to hold pressure in a brake line on a race car application is listed in a current catalog I have for about fifteen bucks...and it's made out of a purty blue adonized aluminum too. Guess it came from the wrong side of the Chinese railroad tracks....

Hi Ron
good observations. I should have known that the price would be up there if I"d have realized that NASA and Chinese railroad tracks were involved!!!
Now I kinda hate to put the part on the tractor now that I realize how special it is! LOL!
