What type of weld(rod #)works best for building up the bottom end of the shift lever. Got an A that gets stuck in gear once in a while. The shifter looks like cast iron - Is it and does it need to be pre-heated before any welding is done to it? Thanks for any replies,Best Regards.

To find out if that shifter is cast iron (which I seriously doubt) or not, take a file to it. If it files real easy and the material kind of “flakes off” and looks kind of powdery then it is cast iron and needs to be handled as Fredd posted. If it files hard and the filings look more like fine metal “slivers”, then it is mild steel and can be welded with 6011, 6013, 7014, 7018, or any other mild steel rod of your choice.

Build it up, grind it down so that it is snug in the rails both side to side and fore and aft but still moves fairly easily. It will get loose again with time. They always do! :>)

If the shifter is indeed cast iron, then you need nickel rods. I never use preheating however some encourage it as well as putting in hot sand to cool slowly. These are soft however and probably not to durable for a wearing surface on a shifter.

I have never built up an A shifter, but have done several 450 & SMTA'S. Just used 6013 to build up & ground to shape.
