I have an early (1965) gear drive Farmall 656. Hydraulic pump is worn. How do I know which pump or pumps to order? Suppliers mention piggyback power steering pump. Parts book mentions second pump if draft control. (I have draft control). Do pumps come out attached to plate on left side of tractor? Thank you.....jkspratt

If your tractor has a rockshaft it has a piggy back pump. The main pump runs the steering and the outlets. I would put in a 17 gal pump.

Also, you will see pumps of 12 GPM and 17 GPM listed for this tractor. They are basically the same pump and either can be used on your tractor. They get the higher GPM by shimming the gears inside the pump to slightly closer tolerance. The 17 GPM pump is usually about $30 or $40 more than the 12 GPM pump.

JK,

Just to add to the Vet's comments.

They are both mounted behind that square plate on the left side of the tractor just forward and under your clutch. The front pump handles the power steering and remotes; the back (piggyback) pump runs the hitch only.

Just take out the outer row of bolts initially to remove the mounting plate along with the pumps attached. Don't forget all the o-rings too.

The plate sets on dowel pins, so is very easily to re-align when you're goin' back together.

The pumps are a piggy back design so if you have three point and aux. hdy. You need a 70933 hitch pump that is a 12 gal per min pumpand ya need a 391351 draft pump then all pumps are new.
