Hay guys lets here about the disk brakes on these tractor's what do you do to keep them working.
With out a loader on it nothing would be safe.
Has any one ever thought about putting Hyd. brakes of some kind on there.
Lets here from you guys on some ideas on the fix to these or some way to make it work the way brakes should work.

Im in MN & most of these tractors sit out side,
these tractors were used to pick corn, Cultivate,
disk, for snow removel.
You name it-It was used for all kind's of things.
For those of you that say there good brakes & nothing wrong with them, You must keep the tractor in the shed all the time.
Every farmer around here that has a SM or a tractor with that kind of brakes has truble with them.
I have older JD's & they work any time, No problem
at all with them.
I Have heard of machining of the serface, The anti seaze sounds good, I used sylicone spray on the ball mecanizem, I think the glazing is the most important thing.
Even thought of sand blasting the disks a litle.
Then do the surface of the metal parts.
I guese when you guys say you have to maintain them thats fine but what would you do if you had a car that had brakes like these? Mantanice is fine but not this mutch. JD you fix when the dont work & then they last 10 years.
This type of brake was used on lots of combines & tractors & all are very high maintainence.
You have some good ideas.
I have a SM with out a loader thats not runing write now I will try some of these things on it.
If it all works ill stop at the bottom of the hill a say HI to you! If not i will just wave on the way by.

One other thing that I have done is had the outside brake housing machined thinner to compensate for wear that occurs on the actuator plates, rear end housing, and brake housings. You need to do some measuring but this really helped when my 560 was running out of adjustment on the brakes even with new discs in.

I have found that coating the balls with never seize helps alot as well. I have had them glaze before, just scuff em with some sand paper...Jim

Breaking the glaze on all the surfaces is a big help in making the brakes work. I know when the breaks get weak on the Super M, Dad just pulls them off and scuffs all the surfaces with the grinder to break the glaze. Then they work again.

One thing I've read about a few times over the years is having the disks relined with clutch liner or even Kevlar as a permanent cure to the glazing problem.

We had a 460 that had the same problem. They would glaze over and just slide instead of grip. Put in new discs and put the old ones outside in weather. When the new ones glaze over put them outside and put the old ones back in brakes will be like new again. The weather removes the glaze when getting wet and drying out. Worked for us.

I think that thoses brakes work pretty good. Right now I have 2 tractors that have thoes brakes. I like them better than the band breaks. The big thing is keep them clean (make sure there is no oil leaking on them, bad seal) like all the others have said. When they are working right you dont have to push as hard as the band type.

Just fix the brakes and take care of them, they will be fine.

Nothing wrong with those brakes, they just require a bit of maintainence that a lot of folks refuse to do. If you neglected your car or pickup brakes as much as most folks do tractor brakes they wouldn't be any good either.
