I have an H4 magneto and the serial number ends in "X" and there is an "XR" stamped on the impulse coupling. According to the Blue Ribbon IH manual on mags this means that the mag has a 10 degree rotation/spark range rather than the regular 35 degree rotation on the normal H4 mags meant for W6,H,M, etc. Anyhow, this would explain my frustration with trying to get my W6 going with this mag and having no luck. Does anyone know what this mag may have come from and better yet does anyone know how to convert it to the standard H4 configuration with the 35 degree rotation/range? Thanks!!

I bought one of those 10 degree mags at an auction because it was cheap. I looked through an IH magneto repair book for the difference and it says that they were used on power units for a baler.

I've wondered what it would hurt, if anything, to use it on a tractor, but I haven't tried it. Yet.

Yes you can go and put a H-4 on as who would know what has been changed over the years. Just make sure when you replace it you dont get one for a DIESEL as their rotation is reversed from a gas only engine.

You need to contact the MagMan that post's on here, I haven't seen him on here lately. He repairs mags and probably knows what changes to do on your mag.

Are you getting any fire from the mag? Hold the coil wire within 1/4" of a good ground and then
crank over the engine. You may need to clean and adjust the points to .013". Wipe the points
with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to remove any crud. If there's no fire you may need new points & condenser. Then try the same procedure.
Still no fire make sure your grounding switch isn't in the off position. This is what kills your engine when you shut it down. You had better check this first. After new points & condenser and you still don't have any fire it could be a weak coil. Should be a nice hot spark.
You can pull the cap off the coil and use a flatblade screwdriver to see if those magnets are weak. If they're ok it should grab that screwdriver quickly. The magnets create the spark when they pass by the coil. That's why they
need to be strong.

I have an old Wico mag that has weak magnets and it has a faint spark when I hold the coil wire. Hal
