I am looking for a Farmall H to restore. I plan to restore it and use it to pull in my clubs antique tractor pulls in Maine. I am being told that the H came with two different trannies. One was a straight 4 or 5 speed and one had high and low range. Two questions, 1. what are the two options and which one would be best in the pulls? Thanks everyone

well fella's I don't know much about the m&w kits all i do know are the one I have seen on a farmall M it was a kit that went on to the right brake housing there was a gear set i that when you pull the lever bak one notch it was a reduced gear which gave a you a range "not a T.A."when you pulled the lever back all the way it disconected the trans via disconceing the counter shaft from the bull gears. "this is not recomened for pulling and these units didnt last long rather complicated and cheasy next how serious are you about pulling? just for hobby or do you want to make everybody think what the the hell. In my neck of the woods we have pulled every thing from a farmall F20 with a olds 455 from a 442 68' vintage. yes we wreck classic cars to pull with. any more questions please write me hassanford@hotmail.com

Try to get one with a low speed trans. A guy that I pull with has one of these. He pulls it in the 4500 pound class. He tells me that the enginge is stock. except for the valves beign ground. I tell you what that tractor really impressed me he out pulls Oliver Super 88, light M's, Allis WD 45', JD B's, Even light JD A. I pulled my stock H with normal gear I did alright but ran out of power when 12000 lbs was on the slead. Yet I still beat 3 John Deere B's and one other H. Andrew

Herb:

I have an H with the Heisler 2 speed option, it is really nice for light duty work, raking, or pulling a rotary hoe. It is not that great for pulling, so if I were you, I would not worry about having it on a pulling tractor.

The H came with a 5 forward gear trany. You could however get a variety of gear speeds. For pulling a low 1st gear actually doubles the HP.

With respect, horsepower is a measure of work. The tires will be turning slower, and if traction is available there will be longer pulls due to the increased torque applied over a longer time. With small tractor stock classes, initial speed to build inertia while the sled is still "light" is not as much of a factor.
My two cents, JimN

Farmall only built the H & M with 5-speed transmissions, and the road gear, 5th could be locked out by installing a longer bolt/capscrew into the transmission top cover to prevent engaging 5th gear. The high/low transission was an aftermarket kit that replaced the constant mesh primary reduction gears in the front of the transmission. M&W Gear Co. and Heisler were those companies names. They both added four extra speeds faster than 4th gear (about 5 mph) but slower than 5th gear (15-16 mph) The straight 5-speed is fine for hobby pulling. Supposedly the M&W & Heisler Overdrives increased the strength of the constant mesh gears & the pilot bearings in the H & M's but that's debatable. Pulling very heavy loads in 4th gear puts the most amount of strain on the pilot bearing. Pulling in the lower gears should not cause a problem. There were also aftermarket faster gear sets offered to increase ground speeds in the four lower gears for the H's & M's.

Whoever told you that is full of crap.

The H only came with a straight 5-speed transmission. No ranges. No TA. No synchromesh. If the tractor came equipped with steel wheels, road gear was locked out, but it was still a 5 speed transmission.
