I took the top cover off and noted that everything seems to be working well, but when the TA clutch is engaged, it can still be turned by hand. The pressure plate is obviously not pressing against the clutch plate, but it looks the clutch linings are full thickness. All I can see wrong is the springs may be wrong or weak. any other ideas?

You did not see any 1/4 inch bolts sticking out of the T/A sressure plate did ya??/ Something is keeping the T/A pressure plate from ingauging , so something is sticking someplace and since i can not see it on here i can not tell ya. Got to be something stupid.

I assume you're saying the pressure plate has bolts to keep it compressed like the engine clutch.

I may have missed that, boy would that be an easy fix. I'll check that tonight.

Any idea how many there might be?

Been a long time since I had one apart, but seems to me there is a “throw out” type bearing that will run against the fingers to disengage the clutch and allow the planetary and sun gears to do their thing. Check that there is some clearance between those fingers and the bearing and check the linkage adjustments too.

Post back with what you find.

Yes, there is about 1/16 clearance from the throwout bearing to the release fingers.

The tractor is always in low range.

I can't figure out any fix except to split it and check the spring dimensions.

I can see the ventilation grooves in the clutch lining, on both sides. The guy I bought it from said the TA had not worked since overhaul, so I'm guessing the pressure plate was set up wrong.

Something is wrong like the tractor vet says. There isn't a lot that can be worked on without splitting and taking it apart...
