Where there's smoke...

In the middle of reassembling a SA after a 2 year restore. The other night I was checking to see if the lights work after installing the new wire harness. Turned the switch on bright and sucess they all worked. Turned it to dim and I caught a glimpse of smoke coming from the back of the dash. Figured I had something wired wrong so I pulled out the battery and checked and re-checked, it was wired correct. Tonight I connected the battery with jumper cables so I could see where the smoke is coming from. Turned the lights on high for a good long while and no smoke. Turned them on dim and about 20 seconds later, smoke started coming out of the light switch. I was expecting to see it coming from that wire wound load connected across 2 terminals on the light switch. It only does it on the dim setting. Any ideas here? Is it time for a new switch? When I got this tractor there was no fuse in the holder.

Thank You,

Are you using the 1133 bulbs and is the resistor bolted to the correct terminals?

Everything is original, switch, lights, etc. The resistor is connected to the right terms. The resistor gets warm but doesn't smoke on dim. The smoke is coming from inside the light switch its self not the wire wound load connected across the terms. Wonder if I can take that switch apart? The fact that the fuse was removed when I got the tractor tells me that there was a previous problem with this switch.

Jim (below) has called it right. It's the dimming resistor heating up when the switch is on the "D" setting.

It's normal for the resistor to get hot to the touch - but not hot enough to glow red or smoke. However light smoke can occur briefly if it has been unused for a long time and the resistor's insulation (asbestos!) has become soaked with oil, etc.

Overheating can be because the resistor has worn thin in one spot, or because one or more coils has become shorted. Also having lights higher in wattage than original will cause it to overheat.

The resistor on the switch limits voltage to the lights on dim. All the light current goes through it. It must get hot. It will smoke if the lights have been non-operational for years. Oils and dust and collected junk is burning off. If it glows, it may be too old/thin, and in need of replacement. The correct power resistor (in my calculations) is 2 to 4 ohms at, at least, 80 watts dissipation.
Good luck and New Year, JimN
