i have a super c, wired up as #6 of bob m"s wiring diagrams. its been converted to 12v a long time, and has worked normally, stopping with the switch. recently, the alternator stopped charging, so i got a new one. after i hooked it up, the engine won"t stop using the switch. i have to unhook the wire off the bat terminal on the alternator to get it stopped. any ideas where to look for the solution? i unhooked the wire off one side of the resistor but that made no difference. what is the function of the warning light in the circuit? thanks.

The warning light serves two functions: 1 - It lights whenever the ignition is "on" and the alternator is NOT charging (same as the battery idiot light in your car's dash...), and 2 - It limits backflow current from the alternator when you turn the ignition off to a level below that required to fire the coil.

If the motor runs on after you kill the ignition switch it means the warning lamp is drawing too much current. Solution is to replace the bulb with one with a smaller current rating - like a #1815, #168 or #194 instrument panel/side marker bulb.

Alternatively you can install a diode (1N4004 or similar) in series with the lamp, with the diode band end wired to the alternator #1 terminal..

Some how you have your wires in the wrong places. From the alternator big battery lug you go to the amp gauge. From the #1 terminal you go to the ignition switch, hot side when turned on, thats also the one with the lite or diode in it. The #2 terminal goes to the big battery lug on the alternator. Hope this helps you some.

i should add, the electrical shop checked the new alternator and said it was working normally.
