3 Basic Questions - 350 Utility

These questions seem pretty basic, but one of my teachers once told me there is no such thing as a dumb question, as long as I don't know the answer.

1. I have a small gas leak from the carb when the tractor is sitting, so yesterday I shut the gas off at the carb. It leaks much more with the gas shut off. How to fix?

2. The PTO creeps when the lever is not engaged. If I push the lever down and hold it down, the PTO stops completely, but when I let off on the down force, it creeps along again. It engages as it should when I pull up on the lever. How to fix?

3. 6v or 12v. How can I tell? I think the 350U was 6v when it was made in 1956. When I bought it, it has a 12v battery installed. It all looks original, so I don't know if it has been converted to 12v, or if it is 6v with a 12v battery.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

In addition to Old's comment on the PTO, There is a possible linkage problem with the pivot point and rod mechanism going down to the Unit. Check it for looseness and lost rotation/motion. If there is, the adjustment will be impossible. The lever must latch into the notches at both ends of the lever travel, and be without slop. When in the down position (stopped) the PTO shaft is stopped by an internal brake, which slows and stops the attached machinery much more rapidly than coasting.

You may need a new shutoff valve at the gas tank.
Most of those tractors that were originally 6 volts had a + positive ground. Does it have an alternator or generator. The alternator would be - negative grounded. The ignition could still be 6 volts if they used a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and coil or used a 12 volt coil. Hal

Your gas leak sounds like a carb rebuild and replaceing the sediment bowl assembly. The PTO sounds like it needs adjusted as per the I-T manual. As far as 6 volt or 12 it depends on if it has a genny or alternator. If it has an alternator its most likely to be 12 voly - ground. If it has a genny its probably 6 volt + ground.
