Saw this old engine today. The cast letter on the block was a "W", and I think I read the model number on the tag as "JD14A". It resembles the "start on gas-run on diesel" engine in an MD, but for some reason, it looks bigger. I don't know anything about these engines, but I would sure like to hear her run. If it is not the MD engine, how much horsepower do you think it has?

I own a UD14a, rebuilt it many years ago. The 14a is a 1550 rpm, c.100hp rig, vs 1400xc.85 hp for the ud14. It uses the same crank as the 14, but turns faster & has a far better engine balancer. The motor was designed to start under any conditions and has an exotic head with gasoline combustion chambers, carburetor, and a system of levers and valves to transit from gas to diesel. It starts with a common auto battery (if it starts at all).

I'm currently fighting to free a piston frozen from years of neglect. I'll probably have to drop the pan and take a butane torch to the interior of the piston while putting hydraulic pressure to the top of the piston by making a zerk fitted spark plug and pumping in a high pressure fluid, as simpler things haven't yet worked.

It is a UD14A power unit, same engine as in the TD14A. (Originally TD14 then TD14A then TD14 Series 142 then TD15)It has 470.7 cu in rated 76 hp at 1400 rpm. Max torque 322 at 850 rpm.

I found serial number list for crawlers. Actually the TD14A changed to TD14A Series 141 in 1956 and to TD14A Series 142 in 1956 and TD15 in 1960. The Series 141 and 142 still just showed TD15A on the decals. I don't have serial numbers for power units.

I notice the tag says 1200 rpm but my specs say 1400 rpm. Maby they changed the speed for different years. ??

Paul,

This is a far cry from a 16 row planter. Stay focused boy, what the heck are you looking at now, irrigation ? I will call you next week, see ya and happy new year to you, and to all.

Hardy harr harr,

Ok, you figured me out. I've been thinking,,,,, ,,I put this 76hp diesel engine in my old H, and put triples on for duals, and I bet I'd be the only guy around pulling a sixteen row planter with a 48 H. ;)

That would be a UD-14 engine. If I remember I think they were about 80 HP.They will fit the TD-14 series dozers but not the 142 series, the water outlet on the front of the head gets in the way for the late models!Where is this beast located, and is it for sale? There are some guys over on the red power site that would love to get their hands on that beast!

I saw it on a lot during New Years Day, so there wasn't anyone around. I just thought it was interesting, but if you want me to get a phone number for the place I can. It is located about 15 miles west of Effingham, IL. (I57/I70 interstate) in south/Central Illinois. If it is for sale, it would probably sell as a complete unit. Let me know if you want me to check on it for you.
