Rebuilt the carb. put in Autolite plugs, still won't idle, runs about 90 seconds. This is the first time it has been cranked in 10 years. It runs fairly good for about a minute in a half with the choke half way on, I try to back off of the choke but it won't stay running. It won't crank without the choke on? I am obviously not a mechanic what do I need to do?

I use a temporary setup to eliminate fuel tank/screen as a problem. I use a small gas tank from a lawn mower with an in-line shut off and attach a rubber fuel line directly to the carb. If it runs fine, it is a tank/gas line/screen problem.

Check fuel flow. pull line off at carb.should have a stream as big as line. If not look at and clean screen in thr bowl. Also the screen in carb,[It is on the nut that he line screws in to. Bill

When I unscrewed the main fuel line to the carb their wasn't a screen. It is a marvel schribner or something like that is it supposed to have a screen?

Check the sediment bulb on the bottom of the tank. There is a screen in it.

Some have a rolled up type screen in the inlet of carborator.

Also inlet from the tank into sediment bulb might be pluged.. HTH

If I see gas in the sediment bulb the whole time it's running could it still be stopped up? Thanks for your suggestions!

sounds like the idle circuit is plugged in the carb. Are you sure all of the orifices and passageways are clean?

I thought it was all cleaned out. This was my first job so I could easily be mistaken. This is also the first time I've gone to this website. Thanks for the response. I used, carb. cleaner, steel brush and compressed air, I thought everything was cleaned out.

The sediment bowl will always show gas in it, even if the tank runs dry. The screen at the carburetor is actually inside the fitting that the fuel line screws into. So, shut off the valve at the tank, take the line off at the carb, remove the fitting from the carb and you will see the screen. Open the valve to make sure the gas is really pouring out of the line, more than just a dribble. When you cleaned the carb, did you have it apart? I once used compressed air on a carb, thinking it would clear the passages without taking it apart, and promptly collapsed the float, causing much wailing and gnashing of teeth after I discovered the problem!

I noticed it was leaking at the carb. A local mechanic told me I should have used a file to level out the bevel on the lid and base of the carb. He suggested I take it off and file it down. This I did and I checked the filters listed in all of the responses. Now I have good gas flow, but.....the thing won't turn over now. The starter was hitting every time. Do they go out that sporadically?

It sounds like you"ve got a case of the gremlins! The fuel problem and the starter problem are unrelated, but as I always tell myself, anything that moves can break. As with all starter problems, check to make sure that the battery terminals are clean and tight, the ground is clean and tight, and all other terminals are clean and tight. Make sure that the battery is charged. If you have a volt/ohm meter, check for voltage at the starter terminal when you push the start button- if not there, move back down the cables until you find voltage. That should isolate your problem. If the starter has voltage, tap on it a bit. Then take the bolts that hold it on loose- sometimes the gear jams against the flywheel and that should free it up. The starter grounds through it"s base, so that must be clean and tight.
Let me know what you find or give me more symptoms- I enjoy the mental exercise! These machines are tough and simple and reliable, once we get the bugs worked out.

What's the condition of the gas tank? I saw your earlier post under topic I started on the Super A and left a reply.
