Plowing is my farvorite job. When I was a kid at home we had an M w/13.6 tires and pulled 3-14. We had silt loam ground, I'd put the M in 4th pin her ears back and drop the plow, we always plowed at least rim deep on the rear wheel of the tractor. Then my dad got prosperus and bought a 460. If we were going to do some heavy work we went and got the M. The M had M&W goodies in it and would tickle the 60hp mark on the dyno. Our neighbors only pulled 4 bottoms with their 560

Plowed for years with 3-14 FH model 311 on a 460. Rolled along in 2nd high side but often had to pull her back into low torque. Very steep ground around here and heavy limestone clay. Neighbor had a 5-bottom semi mounted on his 560 and rolled in 2nd high-I always thought it was turned up a tad & had 3 sets of weights. 2nd high is a little over 4 mph on these-nice speed to roll sod. The type of bottom plays a big roll in how hard a plow pulls as well as soil type. Also have a 4-bottom that pulls easier than the 3 bottom, but it tears & ripples sod & it takes more trips to get the ground in order! Pay me now or pay me later. If a plow pulls hard, it probably is doing a good job.

Back when we ran the M's and Super M's we pulled a 2 X 14" tumble bug. When we went from the 140 rollover 4 X 18" to the 145 hyd reset rollover we couldn't use the 1456 as it did'nt have the front weight to hold the tractor down while lifting the plow outta the ground, even with a full set of weights and calcium in the fronts. We now plow with a 7140MFD, but you can get by with a 7120MFD. For a little while we plowed with 3 X 16's and a 766, worked real nice. Even used an 884 on that plow but had to add 15.5X38's full of fluid 3 sets of rear weights and a full set of weights and fluid up front. All our plowing is on irrigated ground and done between 4-5.5 MPH. Jake

I agree with Billde. I plowed 35 year old sod this fall with a 560 diesel and a IH 540 semi-mount plow. My tractor weighs 8800 LBS and dynos at 65 HP and I couldn't pull the 4 x 14" in 2nd with the plow as deep as it could go. I had just enough traction most of the time to pull it in 1st gear. In pulled way to hard for second gear and 1st was really too slow for the plow to cover well. I had to disk it after plowing just to get it to cover the trash. In most situations a 560 will pull a 4 x 14" plow in 2nd gear which is an ideal speed for plowing. In sod I'd rather use a 3 x 16" with the 560.

Ryan, in average soils the 560 will pull 4 bottoms, the 460 would be well matched with a 3 bottom.

I pulled 4x14 semi mount with my 460 gasser for three years and it did fine not as good as my old 450 diesel did but it would haul them in 3rd in the corn ground stick ahead and 2nd in sod at 8-10 inches deep but i just plum hated that tractor .

When IH rated these tractors, were they rated on 14 inch plows and mounted instead of trailer. My M pulls 3-14 plows in some fairly heavy soil so if a 460 or 560 can't do that its time for an overhaul. Its also going to depend what gear you want to go in.

Ryan,

Must pretty much depend on where ya live and what you're plowin'.

Here, a 560 will handle 2 bottoms; maybe three in the lighter soils. A 460 would be used to pull a hay rake or a yard drag.

A four bottom is all my 966 wants in this area.

Just plain ol' silty loam. Clear down in 3rd gear and pullin' to the nuts in this 35+ year old sod.

When I was doing plowing on continuous rowcrop land, mostly real heavy clay 4X16 was big enough for the 1086 with 20.8x38R2 tires. Neighbours used comparable MFs or JDs and 120-130 HP for 4X16s. To pull 5Xs needed to go to 150plus HP and 4X4. Luckily notill combined with reduced till now prevails, as does a market dictated hay crop rotation! With the older 06s and clamp wheels, the wheels broke.

Now Allan;

I pulled 4-16"s semi mount in 4 and low with TA up. That was with the 706 german at about 4.5mph. Pulled 3-14"s trailer with Super M in 2nd. Pulled 2-14 mounted with the Fords and Fergusons.
